Still incredibly pissed off about the whole Nicholas Galitzine being straight thing

Oh we can’t queerbait folks on our shows any more, so we’re just gonna start doing it with actor’s careers now?

Ok, obvious disclaimer: I don’t blame Galitzine for being straight or feel like any actor should be obligated to come out before they’re ready, but goddamn I was so ready to see an openly queer leading actor with a big base of fangirls getting roles all over the place and in general being a hot Hollywood commodity.

I was looking forward to seeing a lot more of Galitzine specifically as a queer actor taking on queer roles. Being told he’s actually straight feels like both getting the rug pulled out from under me AND a real slap in the face.

Casting directors, there are PLENTY of hot, talented and charismatic queer actors you could be putting in queer roles to slingshot them to fame. Please pick some of them!

Ok I don’t really wanna step on toes here and I do feel like people are allowed to feel whatever feelings they are feeling but I really want to push back on the “queer baiting” aspect of this post because 1) real life people can’t queer bait, that is a term developed and solely for media and I think using it for real life people sets a dangerous precedent around exploring and figuring out ones sexuality, as everyone has a right to do without having the term queer baiting floating around. But 2) Nicholas has never once queer baited. Full stop. Even if we apply the principles of queer baiting as they are understood in regards to fiction, it still doesn’t fit.

Not to go all dictionary, but Oxford defines queer baiting as such:

the incorporation of apparently gay characters or same-sex relationships into a film, television show, etc. as a means of appealing to gay and bisexual audiences while maintaining ambiguity about the characters' sexuality

Nicholas has actually been very open about the fact that he does not consider himself part of the LGBTQ community, and I’ve seen proof of this in interviews he’s done going back to about 2017. He also mentioned it in a podcast interview he did with Marc Malkin from Variety right before the actors strike last year. And he has said it multiple times in the promo tour for Mary & George, that although he is not part of it he feels very uplifted and accepted by the LGBTQ community and how much he treasures that.

I think it’s worth it to point out that in each of Nick’s projects where he plays a queer character, the directors, writers, and other creatives involved, are queer themselves! His projects aren’t happening in some kind of unchecked, straight vacuum in an attempt to trick LGBTQ people. I am a huge supporter of queer media (I run a discord server and have a podcast!) and I will absolutely always choose to support queer creatives and I make a conscious decision to prioritize queer stories over heterosexual ones. I just don’t believe this current trend of lining up characters’ sexualities with the sexuality of the performer is going to bring us to the wonderful freedom of expression in Hollywood that people seem to think it will (but also we did a whole episode about this on the aforementioned podcast!)

If you have to bring out the dictionary definition of “queerbaiting” you’ve already lost the argument. Language and concepts grow and change over time, and queerbaiting includes celebrities like Harry Styles, Taika Waititi, and Nicholas Galitzine who cultivate a queer image to build a fanbase and then turn around and come out as straight.

It would be one thing if queer actors weren’t systematically denied leading roles and chances at fame, but this thing happens ALL THE TIME.

If these people “respect” and “support” the queer community so much they need to stop taking roles that COULD have done what I thought Nicholas Galitzine was doing and ushering a new era of queer leading actors, and instead let queer people play our own roles.

The roles that made him famous could have EASILY gone to an actually queer actor and created actual queer representation in Hollywood but we’re stuck with another straight guy pretending to be gay. It’s infuriating and insulting.

reblog to save a liFE

Up to now, I have been drawing random generic suit jackets.

Never again.

cc: @petermorwood

I don’t think it’s accidental that the English Cut suit seems to be worn by Mr Bond. ;->

And, though not shown on the infographic, don’t forget suits with double-breasted jackets, which have been in style for decades: here are examples from the 1920s to the 1970s.

After the ‘70s, that style faded away until it made a return in the mid-2010s when IIRC “Kingsman” caused a real-world uptick in suits for everyday wear.

Also NB that the Tuxedo drawing doesn’t actually show a Tuxedo, unless it’s an American terminology with which I’m not familiar. That’s a tailcoat, which has tails, is a coat and is worn with white tie.

image

A Tuxedo (over here, a dinner-jacket) is in the next panel, Black vs White Tie, and doesn’t have tails, is a jacket and is worn with black tie.

Wearing the wrong thing can lead to confusion, whether accidental or snarkily deliberate.

(The link to YouTube keeps dropping off this post. If it goes away again, the clip is here. A longer version with a fuller development of what’s going on, is here.)

Interesting side-note, the tuxedo / dinner-jacket was a development of the old smoking jacket, and its name in many Continental European languages - French, German, Italian, Spanish - is still “der / le / lo / el smoking”…

*****

“Downton Abbey” and “Jeeves and Wooster” are good sources of info for how these looked when worn regularly at their set times of day, rather than just on special occasions as nowadays.

Hugh Laurie as Bertie Wooster gets excellent mileage from his tailoring, wearing it properly as clothing not costume, and looks at ease in formal attire even when his only (IIRC) white-tie appearance is in the dock of a magistrate’s court.

Even so, he seems much more comfortable (and hangover-free, mostly) in everyday suits which, though somewhat dated in details, would still look good today.

Sailor’s Slops

1600s-1700s

Extremely rare survival of a shirt and breeches, called slops, as worn by sailors from the late 16th through to the 18th centuries. This unique set of loose, practical sailor’s clothing reveals life aboard ship. They are made of very strong linen to endure the hard, rough work. There is tar across the front from hauling ropes. The breeches are heavily mended and patched, which the sailor would have done himself.
