Reviews!

To any authors/publishers/ tour companies that are looking for the reviews that I signed up for please know this is very hard to do. I will be stopping reviews temporarily. My husband passed away February 1st and my new normal is a bit scary right now and I am unable to concentrate on a book to do justice to the book and authors. I will still do spotlight posts if you wish it is just the reviews at this time. I apologize for this, but it isn't fair to you if I signed up to do a review and haven't been able to because I can't concentrate on any books. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. I appreciate all of you. Kathleen Kelly April 2nd 2024

San Francisco astrologer Julia Bonatti has been haunted for years by the hit and run death of her fiancé, Michael Sefton. The driver of the vehicle was never apprehended. The lone witness to the accident spoke to no one and now is dead. Even the cold case detective assigned to the case died before any resolution was found. Every time Julia thought she might be getting close to an answer, each clue led only to a dead end.

Michael, a graduate student, had just returned from an archeological dig in Guatemala when he was killed. But why did he mail his journal to Julia for safekeeping before his return home? What was he afraid of? Why did another graduate student fall to his death on that trip? And now, another man connected with that journey has been murdered closer to home. And the murderer hasn’t finished.

When Julia finally finds the courage to delve into the journal Michael sent to her years before, she learns of the undercurrents, jealousies and anger between members of the group. She begins to understand the pressure and fear her fiancĂ© was coping with and his suspicions of their University mentor who was most likely engaged in unethical and illegal behavior. But events soon take a darker turn when Julia finds a likeness of the Maya god Hunhau, god of death and the underworld, on her doorstep. A strange man covered with markings and tattoos keeps appearing to her but no one else seems to see him. With guidance from another professor she’s introduced to a world she never knew existed.

Is the man she sees human? And is he under the sway of the Maya god of death?

Will he unleash evil or is he here to right a wrong done to his people?

Julia must move quickly or her death will be the next.

About WE, ADULTS

Elliot Svendson has returned to her childhood Minnesota home to lick her wounds after catching her professor husband having an affair with one of his grad students. Leaving behind a promising academic career, she finds herself raising her five-year-old son solo and working at a Talbot' s in the mall to make ends meet.

It' s there that she meets Madison Johnson, a young man with a penchant for skateboards, weed, and older women. What Elliot doesn't know is that Madison is only seventeen years old. When Madison and Elliot's affair is exposed, the news sends shockwaves that will rock their lives and the lives of those around them.

WE, ADULTS is told in four parts (Elliot’s own narration, chapters from her ex’s unpublished memoir, Madison’s screenplay version of the events, and young Jacob Svendson’s eventual college application essays).

The novel is both epic and intimate, striving to balance rage, resignation, humor and heartbreak through the dissection of the brief affair that sends these four lives spinning out of control.

Peter Stenson is the author of the novels FIEND (Random House), THIRTY-SEVEN (DZANC), and THE SEXUAL LIVES OF SUBURBANITES (forthcoming from Jackleg Press). He has stories and essays published in The Sun Bellevue Literary Review , The Greensboro Review , Confrontation , Harpur Palate , and Post Road among others. He teaches writing at Colorado State University.

Peter Stenson on his inspiration for writing the novel

Says Peter on his inspiration for the book, "I was kicked out of high school. I moved across the country to a halfway house for boys. I got better, at least partially. I was eighteen. I earned my GED. I started eating and even working out. I planned on applying to colleges. And then I met a thirty-year-old woman.

She had a crow tattooed across her back and a gap between her two front teeth and smiled with her eyes, like the whole of them, all of which is to say I fell in love or infatuation or at least I fell victim to the idea that she could provide me with the esteem I so desperately craved.

The halfway house had a strict no fraternization rule. I lasted two dates with this woman before the guilt overpowered the fragile consciousness I was trying the develop. I moved out that afternoon and into a Section-8 apartment with the woman and her four-year-old daughter. This novel is my attempt to make sense of this experience."

Shockingly personal...Shaun of the Dead meets Trainspotting.” — MTV.com on FIEND

“This novel is a provocative, thoroughly gripping ride.” — Publishers Weekly on THIRTY-SEVEN

“A book that manages to break your heart, make you dizzy, and punch you in the gut all at once. You will be hard-pressed to find a novel as dark or intense in any bookstore.”  — Kirkus Reviews *Starred* review on THIRTY-SEVEN

Kirkus Reviews praises the novel as "a memorable, enticing account of conflicting lovers," Booklist says, "Stenson's brilliantly vivid prose and striking characters deserve the widest possible audience," and Criminal Element enthuses: "Stenson is one of the best-kept secrets in transgressive fiction." From a voice and stylistic standpoint, WE, ADULTS celebrates the storied tradition of counterculture and transgressive fiction, and is a must-read for fans of Homes, Palahniuk, McCarthy, Welsh, and Easton Ellis.

Cornbread, Ribs, and Murder (Chocolate Martini Sisters Mystery) by Brenda Whiteside and Joyce Proell Book Tour!

About Cornbread, Ribs, and Murder

Cornbread, Ribs, and Murder (Chocolate Martini Sisters Mystery)

Cozy Mystery

3rd in Series Setting - Arizona

Independently Published (April 20, 2024)

Digital Print length ‏ : ‎ 271 pages

ASIN ‏ : ‎ B0CW1GPJR7

It’s a rib cookoff…with a recipe for murder.

Nicole Earp and Emma Banefield are celebrating another birthday at the Dulce Inn with the added fun of a rib cookoff in the park. Not only are chocolate martinis in their plans, Nic has her heart set on winning the cornbread contest. But as the excitement bakes, someone is stirring up trouble for the inn and its employees.

Strange occurrences at the Dulce are on the rise. Slashed tires, menacing phone calls, and unsavory characters add a vibe that threatens the sisters’ anticipated fun-filled stay. When the hot-headed hotel owner is caught wielding a bloody letter opener over a dead coworker, the sisters are embroiled in a caper to help the one person who finds their sleuthing as welcomed as a rattlesnake in her bed. But is she innocent?

The Chocolate Martini Sisters are primed to find out. First, they’ll have to eliminate a host of suspects that includes a dishonest restaurant owner, a jilted girlfriend, an ex-wife, the barkeeper, and a masseuse with a crush. If they can stay off the radar of the surly chief homicide detective long enough, they can put out the fire…unless the killer burns them first.

The third book in this amateur sleuths, cozy mystery series will have you chuckling and on the edge of your seat as the sisters solve the murder.

Read an Excerpt!

“Oh, gawd,” her sister said. This time Em nudged her back toward the elevator.

“Not too far.” She tugged on Em’s sleeve. She wanted to be within hearing distance when he detectives reached the administrative hallway.

Detective Guthrie hadn’t changed in the six months since they’d been instrumental in solving a murder in the inn. His tawny-amber eyes appeared all-seeing, even from this distance. He still wore his mix of brown and silver hair in a close cropped, military style. His suit was obviously well-tailored and expensive. An open-neck Oxford shirt in pale yellow completed his professional appearance. He was a handsome early to mid-fifties man—in a conservative, tight-ass sort of way. Her sister had gone toe to toe with the irascible detective they’d nicknamed Dawg on more than one occasion and enjoyed coming out the victor. “Why so reluctant for an encounter with Dawg?”

“Not in the mood.”

This had been a rollercoaster day for Em: the mess at her house had her down, the expectant fun and the cornbread contest had her up, the discovery of a bloody body threw her back down. “Well, pull up your big girl panties because we’d have to do this sooner or later. We’re smack in the middle of another murder mystery.” Could she feel awful for Leo, for Jillian, yet still feel pumped to dive into an investigation? And they would, wouldn’t they? She peered at Em, wondering if this one was too grisly.

“How could I not expect to see the sisters at yet another Dulce Inn mystery?” Guthrie quirked a brow. “If I didn’t know better, I’d think the Dulce is your permanent residence.”

She swore a chuckle rose and died in Em’s throat.

I never thought my fake marriage, would become real...

Jasper Hamilton

I've always been a pawn in the game of chess my grandfather prefers to play with me. It started when I was a child who didn't have anywhere else to go after my parents were killed. Gone was my home full of love and warmth, and in its place was a mansion with a man as cold as a winter night. The only thing that kept me sane were my friends. Those blue-collar buddies who didn't care about my grandpa's bank account.

I never cared about the money either. Until he threatens to take away the one thing I love in this world. The foundation created in their memory. The only way for me to get it back? Play by his rules, take a wife, and secure an heir. Something I never planned to do after growing up the way I did. But the way I respond to Daisy Williams, and the satisfaction I get from calling her my wife makes me feel like I've been promoted from Pawn to King.

Tropes Included: small town blue collar marriage of convenience brooding for everyone but her

Jasper is book three in The Broken Falls Series: a series of interconnected standalones following a group of friends who have become family in small-town West Virginia, and the women who bring them to their knees. You do not have to read them in order, but each book builds upon the relationships of the last.

"I don't think I can resist tasting those lips again. I've tried."

"I've tried, too." I admit. But I've thought about it more than I should. Wondered if there was still the slight taste of mint from his toothpaste.

"So we're gonna give in together, right?" He licks his lips, as if he's warming his mouth up for what's about to happen.

"Yeah, if that's what you need in order to sleep at night. We can pretend like you're not the one driving this boat."

Jasper drops his head low. "Pretty sure you're right here with me, Daisy Mae. Unless you turn your head at the last minute, you're about to know what my lips on yours is all about. Ya know, in case you forgot."

I didn't forget, will never forget.

An unexpected visit from the daughter of an old mentor launches private detective Terry Luvello into one of the most intriguing cases of his career. Margaret Reasoner, the matriarch of one of Cleveland’s wealthiest and most politically connected families, has recently passed away.

Not trusting any of her children, Margaret had added a clause in her will requiring a private inquest should her death take place under suspicious circumstances. Hired to investigate, Terry spends a week at the Reasoner’s sprawling estate dealing with the increasingly hostile family as he unravels the mysteries of the mansion known as the Shadow House.

Terry recruits his partner and girlfriend, Cleveland police detective Hannah Page to aid in the investigation. The two uncover a web of secrets and lies that stretch beyond anything they have ever experienced. As the deceptions pile up along with the body count, a killer plans the ultimate revenge.

Terry’s ingenuity and uniquely wry sense of humor help him navigate this complex case while juggling the demands of his clinical transition about to enter its final phase. In a household where no one is innocent, Terry must decide just how far he is willing to go to find the guilty party.

I hate adultery cases—every private detective does. Tawdry and nasty by their very nature, they inevitably lead to pain for both the client and the accused. That’s true even if the accused is one of those rare individuals who isn’t actually screwing around.

So why do we take these cases? We take them for the same reason the men and women we follow choose to cheat. As cynical as it sounds, every private investigator knows that it’s sex, not love, that makes the world go round. The two occasionally have some direct relationship, but those instances are not our concern. A PI’s livelihood depends on the man who suddenly realizes his secretary is far more good-looking than his wife or the woman who decides she’s just a little too lonely, waiting for her husband to come home after work. Their wronged partners pay our bills, and we take a deep breath, sigh, and spend one more night peering through a high-def camera next to yet another dirty hotel window.

Fortunately for my sanity, I didn’t rely strictly on those cases. As Terry Luvello, PI, I had developed a good reputation for competence, much of that gained while assisting my police detective girlfriend on two high-profile cases.

Detective Hannah Page stayed with me through it all, though we had some rough moments after the conclusion of both investigations. We got back together after our last case on what Hannah called a “trial basis.” Our reunion overjoyed my mother and my best friend. Hannah’s parents—not so much.

Hannah had also stayed despite the complications and occasional wide-eyed stares caused by my transitioning to male. With just two months to go before my actual surgery, we were now living together in Hannah’s Cleveland Heights home.

I loved her more than I could say, and I believed she loved me back. That love did not keep her from reacting negatively to my latest assignment.

Staring at me before I left that evening, Hannah asked, “Why do you take these cases? Trying to catch those shitheads in the act just depresses you, and we really don’t need the money.”

She wasn’t wrong on either count, but I reminded her of our agreement. “When I moved in here, we said we would split the household costs. Like them or not, the adultery cases pay my part of those bills.”

Hannah shook her head before giving me a kiss goodbye. “Get the hell out of here, but don’t go getting any ideas. Just remember what I said I’d do if I caught you screwing around.”

She had, in fact, told me exactly what she would do, a starring role in that scenario played by the woodchipper Hannah insisted on keeping in our backyard. I shivered despite myself—the cost of a self-assertive girlfriend who wouldn’t dream of going anywhere without her Smith & Wesson.

Tonight’s carnal shithead was one Seamus O’Donnell, a man who differed from the other shitheads I’d chased, if only because he didn’t seem to be, on the surface, a shithead. A computer programmer at Cleveland’s NASA Glenn Research Center, Seamus was outwardly the perfect family man—beloved by his wife, his three young children, and even his golden retriever puppy. I looked through both public and private records and found none of the usual indicators of infidelity. There were no unusual hotel bills, no significant cash withdrawals, and no sudden changes in wardrobe or hairstyle. When I spoke with his wife one week prior, she said Seamus had always been a model husband. Still, she had doubts.
