The Secrets to a Fabulous 30-Day Body Transformation

Perhaps you’re already sprinting steadily through your 2016 fitness resolutions, or maybe you’re still just eating leftover Christmas cookies for breakfast, promising yourself tomorrow’s the big day. To help fuel your own fitness goals, we sat down with personal trainer,Kathy Drayton, to get the skinny on, well…getting skinny. Regardless of what leg of the fitness journey you’re on, these bits of workout wisdom will transform any body into one that’s healthy, strong, and ageless.

In terms of age, what are some essential principles that women need to keep in mind about the realities of muscle memory as they transition from one decade to the next?
Muscle memory is real, and it does help our process of becoming stronger after a stretch of not working out. Regardless of age, or how long it’s been since you worked out, I would encourage you to not compare where you’re at to where you were. Make the most of this moment and start building on today. Being strong and healthy at any age is possible with the right tools to get you there.

Working with so many diverse women, what are some common challenges you find women have, and how do you advise overcoming them?
As women, one of our most difficult areas tends to be the thighs. Cellulite and stubborn fat can seem unmoved, but with proper food and water intake, as well as the right training program, even the most stubborn areas can change. Another common struggle is our obsession with the number on the scale. Clients come to us saying, “I want to lose 20 pounds” and although weight loss is important, we focus on building lean muscle. We encourage our clients not to fixate on the scale. As long as you can see your shape changing and your clothes fitting better, you know you’re transforming.

If you had to break the body’s transformation process down into three categories what would those be?
Step 1: The reset- Prepares your body to receive all the new nutrients and gets it adjusted to the increase in activity.
Step 2: The habit- Implements a new structure to follow, utilizing the tools your plan gives you to create a personal system that allows the plan to work for your body and your lifestyle.
Step 3: The reward- As your body changes, your plan changes. You’ll see how your body responds to the plan and you’ll be able to implement it into your lifestyle–never having to “diet” again. You’ll have a better understanding of what nutrients and training you actually need to become lighter, brighter, and stronger.

What’s your approach to people’s concerns regarding cocktails, carbs, and eating out?
Balance! It’s not about depriving yourself. It’s about creating a goal and focusing enough intention and action on it that you end up avoiding whatever does not bring you closer to achieving that very goal. No one wants to “yoyo,” and falling off your plan is common and easy to do. To avoid that happening, you must first establish a consistent pattern of discipline in your life. Once you are able to have more self control, treating yourself every once in a while is okay.

If someone wants to start today, what are easy exercises that can be done at home to tone arms, thighs, buttocks, and stomach?
Squat jumps, lunges, tricep dips, and push-ups used in a circuit (combining all of the above) are a great way to get your heart rate up and help burn fat. The real key is getting the right amount of protein, fat, carbs, and veggies in combination with your daily workouts—this really drives changes to your body.
