30 Clean Eating Snack Ideas

Eating the right snacks can really make or break a diet. Eating snacks with high amounts of sugar and carbs can leaving you tired or craving more food. A lot of people seem to be misinformed when it comes to store bought snacks and don’t realise just how much sugar and preservatives they contain. So I’ve compiled a little guide for snacks that are high in protein, fiber and nutrients to help keep you full and healthy.

1. Yogurt dip. Greek yogurt can be made into so many flavorsome dips such as avocado, tzaziki and berry. Serve with either apples or raw veggies (carrots, cucumbers, bell peppers, etc).

2. Boiled eggs. Eggs fill you up and they’re packed with vitamins. Cut them into small slices and sprinkle some sea salt and pepper to jazz them up a little.

3. Yogurt and berries. One of my favourite snacks ever. I feel like I could just always be in the mood for yogurt (better still, frozen yogurt). Try greek yogurt with melted blueberries or chopped up strawberries and a sprinkle of honey.

4. Crustless apple pie. Cut up an apple into a small bowl, sprinkle with cinnamon, nutmeg and a little coconut oil. Microwave for 2-3 minutes. Top with vanilla Greek yogurt (or coconut milk icecream, my one true love) and thank me later.

5. Chili kale chips. Drizzle kale with olive oil, sea salt and paprika or cayenne. Bake until the edges brown but are not burnt, 10 to 15 minutes.

6. Frozen fruit. I freeze almost all my fruit in the summer and I live for frozen mango. My other favourites include frozen grapes (tastes like candy!), strawberries, & pineapple. I also love making frozen watermelon popsicles with a squeeze of lemon/lime.

7. Canned corn. A little biased because I’m obsessed with corn right now, but it really does make the perfect, low-cal snack.

8. Fruit smoothie. Add some fruit, yogurt, almond milk and ice and blend! I’ve been on a real blueberry smoothie kick lately. Try 1/2 banana, handful of blueberries, 1/2 cup vanilla almond milk, and 1-2 tbsp vanilla yogurt. So good I could die.

9. Dark chocolate. Dark chocolate is almost like a superfood. It’s rich in antioxidants and can actually reduce your appetite. When I die please bury me with this coconut dark chocolate.

10. Frozen yogurt bites. Protein fruit. Recipe over here. You can also make it as yogurt bark.

11. Cucumber slices with cheese. Cut up a cucumber and add low-fat cheese slices. I love using Laughing Cow light wedges.

12. Popcorn. But not popcorn that’s drowning in butter (the chemicals & trans fat in movie popcorn is ridiculous). I’m talking about real or low-fat microwave popcorn. It doesn’t have to be boring either. Top with cinnamon & dried apple or sea salt, cinnamon & dark chocolate / cocoa.

13. Nut butter apple slices. Slice up an apple into thin pieces then spread a little bit of nut butter (loving sunflower seed butter right now) over each slice. I also sprinkle some ground flaxseed on top for those omega-3 fatty acids. You’re seriously missing out if you haven’t tried this. Alternatively, slice up the apple and just add cinnamon. It’s full of benefits.

14. Banana chips. I love anything banana so it’s no surprise I’m a fan of banana chips. I’m not talking about the ones you buy in store though – they’re just LOADED with sugar. Make them yourself! Baked apple chips with cinnamon work too.

15. Ants on a log. Does anyone remember this as a kid? Take some celery and fill in the middle with a nut butter of your choice (almond or peanut works best) and then sprinkle some sultanas on top if you’d like.

16. Handful of nuts. Try unsalted almonds, walnuts, or pistachios. They’re packed with heart-healthy fats & protein to fill you up.

17. Rice cakes. Sort of in love with rice cakes because the toppings are endless. Try avocado, garlic, sea salt & pepper, or nut butter and banana, or low-fat cream cheese and cherry tomatoes.

18. Homemade granola bars. Most of the ones you find in the supermarket are not nutritious and will actually leave you craving sugar. These ones are my favourite to make, they’re super delicious and have only 5 ingredients.

19. Healthy muffins. Yes, there is such a thing. Head over heels for these gluten-free healthy blueberry muffins. They’re made with almond meal and free of refined sugars. Also these oat applesauce muffins. I make a batch on Sunday night and they last all week.

20. Dark chocolate covered goji berries. Melt dark chocolate, add in a handful of goji berries, transfer onto a tray and freeze. Goji berries help promote healthy skin and boost the immune system, & dark chocolate is loaded with antioxidants. Talk about a super snack.

21. Chocolate chip raspberries. Add a little dark chocolate chip into a raspberry. So simple but so delicious. Raspberries are full of antioxidants, Vitamin C and have anti-inflammatory properties.

22. Cottage cheese. Cottage cheese is packed with protein which is the best thing to eat if you’re snacking. It can help with weight loss, too. I have a few spoonfuls with some fruit (usually watermelon or berries) on the side.

raw chocolate fudge balls

23. Bliss balls. I try to not make these too often because I literally cannot stay away. It’s an addiction. My favourites include cacao coconut, peanut butter energy bites, apple cinnamon, salted caramel, chocolate fudge & lemon coconut. They’re perfect if you’re looking for something to combat that 3pm slump.

24. Hommus and brown rice chips. These organic brown rice chips homemade hommus = heaven. I’m not a fan of all the preservatives in store-bought hommus and it tastes a million times better when it’s made fresh. Also very into these protein multigrain chips.

25. Steamed edamame with salt. A recent obsession of mine after I tried them at a random service station in the middle of the countryside (so random I know). They taste incredible with sea salt. The benefits are endless too, they contain energy, protein, fiber, amino acids and magnesium (!!).

26. Frozen bananas, two ways. Frozen Chocolate-Covered Bananas and One-Ingredient Ice Cream.

27. Sweet potato chips. Warning: highly addictive. Recipe over here. Take it to another level with this avocado dipping sauce.

28. Roasted chickpeas. Chickpeas are rich in protein and fiber to keep you full, as well as manganese and iron for an energy boost. They’re super easy to make, check out the recipe.

29. Healthy chocolate chip cookie dough. Cashews oats coconut oil maple syrup = vegan cookie dough.

30. Homemade trail mix. I love trail mix but store bought versions are FILLED with excess sugar, oils, and preservatives. I wouldn’t even consider most of them healthy, they’re practically a diet killer. You want raw nuts, sugar-free, naturally dried fruit and seeds. I make my own with goji berries, almonds, cacao nibs, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, & unsweetened toasted coconut flakes.

Okay, now it’s your turn! What’s your favourite healthy snack?
