A Chic, Modern Kitchen with a Nod to the Past

Greetings from Las Vegas! I arrived last night to attend KBIS, the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show, for the first time. I am here along with my fellow 2016 National Kitchen and Bath KB Insiders. We will be scoping out the latest in kitchen and bath design and technology for the next few days. This afternoon at 2:30 pm, we will also be speaking at the NKBA Design Trends Press Conference and Panel in Room N240, so if you are here, please be sure to stop by!

In the meantime, I am getting geared up for kitchen and bath inspiration overload with this beautiful Brooklyn kitchen designed by architect, Gerry Smith which was featured on Remodelista last year. Housed in a 1910 brownstone, the new owners sought to remodel the kitchen in a thoughtful, respectful way that would honor the original architecture of the home and the fact that it had remained in the same family for its first 100 years. The homeowners turned to Smith, who was able to work with the existing floor plan, but updated it to be more conducive to modern living. A mix of beautiful, and very much “of the moment” materials such as brass plumbing fixtures and cabinet hardware, gray paint, marble countertops, and tile laid in a herringbone pattern make the space feel fresh and ideal for a young family, yet each individual component is classic enough to stand the test of time.

{Smith added skylights and French steel windows and doors to flood the space with much-needed light. You’ll notice a mix of countertop surfaces– marble, soapstone, and walnut above, which help to define the individual areas of the kitchen. The brass handle on the pantry door is original to the house. Everything old is new again.}

{Design is all about the details. I love that the interior of the drawers are painted Benjamin Moore Teal for a pop of color. I am feeling quite inspired by this combination of warm gray– Deep Silver by Benjamin Moore on the exterior of the cabinets, aged brass, blue, and walnut.}
