Dare to Differ 2015

Dare to Differ 2015 is an exhibition of 43 contemporary quilts selected by Suzanne Gummow and Julie Haddrick and presented by the Quilters’ Guild of South Australia Inc. The exhibition opens tonight, 2 October at 6.30pm at Gallery M. I can’t be there but two of my new works are on display – Landlines: A River Runs Through It and Kelp Forest:

A River Runs Through It explores pared back lines, fields of colour and the design principle of economy. As I wrote back in May, elegant simplicity is hard – really hard. I learned a great deal making this piece and I hope to turn it into a series.

The straight(ish) line stitching with variegated thread helped to unify the work.

Kelp Forest is inspired by photos of the giant kelp forests off the Tasmanian coast representing strength, flexibity and resilience.

This work is intensely quilted with both straight line stitching and free-motion water bubbles.

Dare to Differ 2015 continues until 25 October 2015. Gallery hours 10am-4pm (Mon-Sat) and 1-4pm (Sun) with a floor talk by Suzanne Gummow at 2pm on Sunday 18 October 2015. See the Gallery M website for more information.
