My Best DIY Natural Beauty Tips for Dealing With Acne

I was lucky to be acne-free all throughout high school. I’m not exaggerating, my skin was flawless. Blemishes were a rare occurrence and seeing a pimple was even rarer. I honestly could not tell you the difference between white heads or black heads because I didn’t know what either looked like and I was even less familiar with the rights of passage for many teenagers – the activity of squeezing pimples.

However a couple of years ago I was struck with adult acne. This took me completely by surprise as I was no longer in my teens (or 20s for that matter) and I was not pregnant. I hadn’t changed my vegetarian diet and had not altered my green beauty routine so I was completely dumbfounded.

After three months of scratching my head, I sought advice from my doctor and naturopath and both advised that it was highly likely my hormones, caused by the stress of my demanding digital marketing job. Both advised I minimise the amount of makeup I wore. The doctor gave me a prescription but I didn’t use it. Instead I took the herbal greens that my naturopath gave me and became determined to find a natural solution.

I did some research and began testing a few natural remedies. After making several masks using egg yolk, oatmeal and other concoctions, I finally discovered the only mixture that worked for my acne-prone skin. It was in fact the most simple of all the remedies, with just two ingredients both found in my kitchen. In fact, the remedy can be used as an application and as a drink!

So here is my foolproof natural way of dealing with acne: DIY toner DIY detox drink made with apple cider vinegar and water. That’s it. Sounds pretty basic I know but I thank this powerful combination for clearing up my skin and returning it to its former glory.

DIY toner for oily/acne prone skin

1 teaspoon of organic apple cider vinegar

3 teaspoons of filtered water

Mix the organic apple cider vinegar with water. Using a cotton ball (preferably organic) dab into the mixture and work the ball across the skin on your face and neck, paying particular attention to areas you are prone to acne such as cheeks and T-zone. Best time to apply the solution is just before bed time as the vinegar does smell a little, just warn your partner in advance so he knows not to go in for a kiss (unless he’s like mine and is used to it!)

DIY detox drink

1 part organic apple cider vinegar

3 parts filtered water

I also recommend drinking a diluted vinegar drink by mixing1 part apple cider vinegar and 3 parts filtered water. This drink helps to detoxify the body. It is an acquired taste at the beginning but after a while, your body will actually crave it. I used to drink it once a day at the height of my pimply face days but now I drink whenever I remember.

After about 2 months, it was like acne had never tormented my life – the turnaround was incredible! I was able to look in the mirror and celebrate the return of my beautiful skin.

This is the acne routine I swear by. It’s not only cheap but it actually works. If you’re suffering from acne, give it a try and let me know what you think!
