Two easy ways to pin back your hair

Do you hate brushing hair out of your face all day long?

Try these two easy ways to pin back your hair for fuss-free down styles.

I love wearing my hair out but I’m forever tucking my hair behind my ears to keep it out of my eyes.

Tucking my hair behind my ear is such a habit that I do it even when my hair it back. It’s like when you go to push up your glasses and realise you’re wearing contact lenses. I had laser eye surgery and I till kept pushing my glasses up for years!

But back to hair habits, constantly touching your hair is not a good idea. Dirt from your hands transfers to your hair making your hair look oily and dirty very quickly. With this simple side pin back, you can keep your hair out of your eyes while still keeping your hair loose.

The second hairstyle builds on the side pin back, with a secret tie at the back. This hidden hair band keeps your hair back off your face, and stays in place more securely than bobbly pins alone.

The side pin back hairstyle tutorial

Step-by-step

  1. Part your hair in the middle, or off to the side. Comb through to smooth it down at the front.
  2. Take a 1-inch section of hair next to your part. Pull this section back but make sure to separate it from the hair at the side of your face. You want to leave the sides down.
  3. Pin your hair back. Use a strong bobby pin and place it horizontally or at a slight angle with the open end pointing up to hold your hair back.
  4. Cover the pin with your hair. Bring your hair over the pin from the back to cover it and make sure the hair at the side of your face is not caught in the pin.
  5. Repeat on the other side and you’re done!

Style tips

  • This side pin back is perfect if you’re growing out your fringe/bangs. They’ll blend into your hair and give the impression of long layers.
  • You can cross a second bobby pin over into an X-shape if you find your hair isn’t staying in place with one pin.

The secret pin back hairstyle tutorial

Step-by-step

  1. Start by pinning back your fringe/bangs as in the previous tutorial, or leave them loose.
  2. Take a small section of hair at your hairline above your ear. Take equal sections on either side or your head.
  3. Tie the sections together with a hair elastic. Make sure they are tied really tightly at the back of your head.
  4. Using your index fingers, separate a section of hair at the back of your head and pull it out and over your hair elastic. Hold the tied section in place as you pull your hair with the other hand.
  5. Tighten the hair elastic again and arrange the top section of your hair over the top, making sure that you can’t see the band underneath.

Style tips

  • Use a small hair elastic as this will be easier to hide in your hair. Choose a clear elastic or one that matches your hair colour.
  • You could also pin the top section of your hair up and out of the way before tying your hair back. I only thought of this after shooting the tutorial and it does seem an easier way to so this hairstyle.

Tell me, what’s your favourite trick for keeping your hair out of your face when you wear it out? Do you love headbands or hair pins, or do you let your hair go wild?
