3 Things Not To Do If You Want To Be Happy

We all want to be happy. Our happiness is so important, that most of the things we do throughout our day are centered around how they contribute to our overall happiness. Whether we do it consciously or not, we make decisions that favor ourselves, very rarely choosing to do something that would make us unhappy.

And yet, we sometimes find ourselves feeling exactly that – unhappy.

Everywhere we look – books, blogs, commercials, and even in our favorite movies – there are lessons telling us all of the right moves to make if we want to be happy. Repeatedly we are told to follow our hearts, do what we love, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc…all to make sure that we’re happy as a clam. We’ve only got this one life to live, right?

Although we can mock the sugar coated lessons that we are told to follow, it’s true – we do only have one life to live and it is in our best interest to make the most of it. However, it’s not just about what we DO need to do, but also about what we need to avoid if we truly want to be happy.

Here are a few things NOT to do if you want to be happy:

  1. Be ungrateful

We are, as humans, flawed. We won’t always make the right moves, and we certainly won’t always say the right things at the right times. But one of the things that can bring down our mood more than anything else is to lose sight of just how fortunate we truly are. Things may not always be sunshine, glitter, and rainbows, but we have so much that we really should be thankful for. Choose to focus on those things that make life great and you’ll soon find that you don’t have nearly enough time to take things for granted.

  2. Always be alone or always with others

As someone who is an introvert and works from home, this is one that I have to frequently remind myself of. Time to one’s self is good, and time with friends is good – but as they say, too much of a good thing can wear you down. Balance your time with others and your time alone to make sure that you’re always at your best. A good mix of both encourages you to be genuinely happy and appreciative of every moment of your time.

  3. Be okay with mediocrity

How many times have you said to yourself, “oh, it’s good enough,” and then looked back only to think that you could have done better? Not giving things your all or just doing the minimum will leave you feeling like you could have done so much more. Very rarely will you be faced with a situation where it’s actually BETTER to do something only halfway. Mediocrity leads to mediocrity – once you accept it once, it will present itself over and over again. Instead of accepting it, strive to always give your best so that you can look back and know that you did absolutely all that you could.

What things do you think you should NOT DO if you want to be happy?
