CAUSE: Help make villages ‘open-defecation’ free. #ToiletForBabli

Whenever we cross a slum area in our very comfortable ride, we can't help but get curious about the life of the many people living in a hut like tent around the sidewalk. It is so easy to be ignorant but if we take a minute to wonder how our own country people are deprived of one of the most basic of human rights- a sanitary toilet. India, in the 21st century, still has 597 million people defecating in the open. This is mainly due to lack of toilets! Imagine the impact it has on the dignity of women of our country and the impact on their health is the actual cry for help.

The lack of toilets increase the risk of microbial contamination of water(bacteria, viruses, amoeba) which causes diseases like diarrhoea.
IMPACT
  • 215,000 children under five die from diarrhoea every year.
  • India has the highest numbers of under-five deaths globally.
  • Nearly half of the Indian children under five years of age are stunted.
  • 20% of deaths among children under-14 are due to diseases caused by poor sanitation and hygiene.
  • Almost 28 million school children across India do not have access to school toilet facilities.
  • Only 6 per cent of rural children less than five years of age use toilets.
