3 EASY STEPS TO A HALLWAY MAKEOVER
Hallways are probably the most overlooked space in a home. It’s easy to pay more attention to “important rooms” first, but I beg to differ when it comes to design and decorating! We pass through our hall multiple times each day. These transition spaces are typically small, can be renovated on a tight budget, and make a huge impact.
Here’s how we did one in just three easy steps: paint the walls, hang new art, and add a rug!
I convinced one of my friends to let me address her hallway. She already has an amazing home, and – like most people – it was one of the spaces they hadn’t touched.
Curating artwork is one of my all-time favorite things. I decided to take a photographic approach, finding pieces that were cohesive by both medium and subject matter (travel). Gallery installations can be tough in tight spaces, so it was important to keep the frames light and consistent, so the collection didn’t become too busy. I love Minted’s simple white frames; they look so clean and modern against the bold wall color.
Speaking of, let’s talk about that wall color! I’ve had a major crush on teal ever since High Point Market in October and I finally found the perfect setting for it. I’m thrilled with the way the high-contrast combo makes the trim pop. The beautiful paint color is Benjamin Moore Blue Danube (#2062-30 in Regal Select Flat Finish, to be exact!). I’ve definitely bookmarked it as a new favorite!
Sometimes a hallway can be tricky in regards to traffic flow, especially when near a staircase. That’s exactly what happens in this scenario. It leaves a small amount of negative space that can’t quite fit a large piece of furniture, but being at the top of the stairs- the blank wall needed a focal point for balance. With the original brass hardware, these modern sculptural pieces made perfect sense:
Adjacent to the hall, there is just enough room for a small sitting area. It’s kind of a continuation of the traffic path on the opposing side of the doorway. I’m obsessed with that vintage modern chair and fuchsia Platner ottoman! Luckily, the homeowner already had these fantastic pieces.
At the completion of the makeover, I was thrilled to hear my friend say, “this actually feels like a room… one that makes me smile each time I pass through!” And, best of all, we completed it on a small budget. See? Paying attention to your hallway can make a huge difference. xo, Sarah
