REVIEW :: J.CREW FALL 2015 RTW

In the drabbest of months, we often struggle to infuse color into our wardrobe in a way that’s not too evocative of Spring. Leave it to J Crew to solve this dilemma for AW15 with a rainbow of sumptuous textures and blingy options, all displayed yesterday morning at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center in New York. Curse the fashion cycles for teasing us so – you’ve got a good six months before you can own any of these pieces yourself, but at least they know how to keep us longing for more (#takemymoney). The positive aspect – and there is always one – is the style inspiration is free. We’ve highlighted the details for easy interpretation back to your own cold weather looks below…

Color Lip Accessory = Fresh. This means pick up a heavy sweater or jacket in a color of the maximal spectra – many good finds are on sale at this point in the season – and pair it with some sunnies, a big earring or scarf with some presence. Then layer on a lip, because your sweet, creamy, mid-winter face is no match for this bold look without it.

If the idea of a bare leg seems many moons away, we’re with ya. However, glitter and bright feather details do not have to be. Winterize the look above with stockings or a leather pant, and your minis magically become tunics when layered with a cozy sweater (disclosure – this look best reserved for ladies with some height on them!).

A heavy midi skirt in a light neutral, paired with that bright wooly top we discussed in scenario one, finished off with a bold metallic bag is siiiiiiiccckkk. If you are one of those people who does not yet own said bold metallic bag, the time is now. You do not need a new black/brown/navy/tan/neutral bag prior to this happening. Carpe Diem. Or rather, Curate Diem.

Given the on going love affair that Americans have with denim shirts, were betting you’ve got a version or two of these in your closet. Potentially stored for the winter, they’re ready for action. And so is that sequin (or lace?) skirt that you’ve tabled till Spring. Obviously the longer the better with materials as stunning as these.

Do you love skinny jeans? Mmm, us too. But if you’d prefer not to resemble the rest of the world, then entertaining some new denim shapes is a good place to start. This ankle length slim-straight jean with its wide cuff perfectly offsets the ankle detail on this shoe and the sequin detail on this coat. If you’re worried about cold tootsies at this time of year, a sheer stocking (with a denier of 15 – 30) will give you coverage that doesn’t compete with the look.

We find that many people have picked up a fabulous pair of wide legged trousers somewhere along the way, and a now are at a loss for how to “pull them off.” Let these to beauties – and Jenna Lyons – be your guide. You’re going to need a heel, maybe even a platform, unless you’re over 5’8.” We need to see your waist/high hip, so make sure your top doesn’t hang too long. Other than that, you’ve got this in the bag. The look is awesomely head turning without much work. And who doesn’t like that on a cold winter morning?!

This last look is the kicker – one that many love but have no confidence in replicating. To start, pull out the fair isle sweater that you already own. Next, procure a printed (jacquard?) midi skirt in complimentary colors. If your sweater is red, black, green and white, your skirt needs to have those colors too. Now, throw on a nice short leather jacket. Your shoe just needs to be slim – we need the balance of your leg to offset the rest of the volume (calf grazing boots are perfect here). And don’t forget some color in your face, for pete’s sake.

This post was put together by my good friends Sara & Allison – the ladies at Le Curate who have been attending all the shows and throwing their favorite looks my way this week! Follow along for more of their cheeky advice on my instagram!
