Review & Swatches: Maskcara IIID Foundation
In the midst of the craze for highlight and contour palettes, Maskcara's IIID Foundation Palette is flying under the radar as a palette that goes above and beyond - not just highlighting and contouring, but also acting as a foundation, concealer, blush, and illuminator! For $42, you get 4 pans of cream color that work magic to create a full face of makeup, reducing what could be a 10 product operation into one that requires 1 palette.
To start, there are three contour, highlight, and blush shades to choose from - mine are Linen, Walnut, Dahlia, and Pearl. Maskcara's website has a color finder to help anyone with a fair to deep skin tone find the color combination that best suits them. Despite offering full coverage, none of the creams feel heavy on the skin. My acne-prone skin hasn't protested once! Both the contour and highlight shades dry to a matte finish, while the illuminator and blush maintain a dewy finish (although they don't feel tacky).
Onto how to HAC (Highlight and Contour). I prefer to start with the contour shade, placing it in the hollows of my cheeks, around the perimeter of my forehead, and below my jaw. I find that starting with the darker shade allows for a little more wiggle room if I go overboard and need to temper it with the lighter highlight shade. Next, I apply the highlight shade in the areas that were left bare after the first step. I follow up with the blush shade, applying it to the tops of my cheeks, but avoiding the center of my face because the dewy finish can emphasize my combination complexion. Last, I go into the highlight shade and apply it to the very tops of my cheek bones - once again avoiding the center of my face for the same reason as before. I'm happy to say that this palette not only provides a near full face of makeup, but it lasts all day! After nearly 12 hours, you can see there was some minor breakdown in the trickier spots around my face. But it stayed in tact for the most part, and could be improved upon with a dusting of setting powder right after application.
Overall: two thumbs up! I really recommend this to anyone who wants to simplify their daily routine without completely forgoing the appearance of a full face of makeup.
