Oh, Jac(k)

Lounging, in both the adverbial and sartorial senses of the word, has never been my forte. For some reason or another, I’ve always associated the term with Marilyn Monroe, rolling around half naked, wrapped in a fur, Chanel No 5, lip liner and half singing, half giggling to herself about men and her hair – for which I have the utmost admiration, but no personal grounds for comparison whatsoever. That, and there always seems to be something else to do.

In the same vein, ‘loungewear’ goes beyond even ‘normcore‘ in newsletter and trend report buzzwords. Do you mean yoga pants? Or wedged flip flops? Or generation-old University jerseys, god forbid? The category has never been too clear to me – I avoid that drop-down menu when online shopping, and I’d imagine that most e-tailers have ended up doing the same.

That is not to say that I would even come close to categorising Jac Jack’s brand philosophy as ‘loungewear’ – far from it. The Australian favourite has long been more directional than what consumers would consider ‘designer brands’, in that it educates their customer in personal style, versatility and staples. But on a sunny 5′o’clock on the Lower East Side in Manhattan, after a long day subwaying up and down the island with Sara,* what had just as well served as appropriate meeting attire translated comfortably to mandatory ‘lounging’ on a fire escape – though better illustrated as a lizard sunning itself, than flirtatious Monroe, but all the more editorially acceptable in clean lines, silks and cottons, messy hair and no make-up.

*I really do need to start grouping together meetings and appointments that are in the same part of town…

Over and out – one exam down, cram-time for tomorrow’s closed-book doom.
