Northwest Folklife Festival

Hi, strangers. It’s been awhile! I realized I needed to get focused and make writing a priority when even my real life friends were asking me if everything was OK because I hadn’t blogged since May 1st! I am glad to be back!

My cousin and her boyfriend are moving back to California next week *sob* so I spent as much time as possible with her this weekend to soak in the last bit of Seattle. She heard about an event called the Folklife Festival and asked if I’d want to go. Without really know what we were getting into I said, “obviously!”

We got there around 5 and didn’t leave until 10. There was an awesome amount of people watching. At one point a guy probably in his low 20s told me he loved my dress and asked if I would twirl. Um. Is that a real question? Of course I will. Apparently I made his day.

There were tons of craft booths. I didn’t buy anything because, frankly, it all seemed a little over priced. We went on Saturday and it didn’t end until Monday so I have a feeling it will be cheaper on Monday.

There were a ton of bands playing in all different styles. My favorites were a scottish band and an orchestra that was AWESOME. Both had the people on the lawns dancing like crazy.

Unfortunately there wasn’t nearly as much sun as was forecasted, but there also wasn’t any rain. So even though I didn’t get a tan it was still a total blast and wonderful to be outside. We have to take the opportunity to be outside and dry every time we can in the PNW!

When she and her boyfriend first moved to Washington we went to the Washington State Fair and I introduced them to elephant ears. A month or two ago I told her that we needed to get an elephant ear before she leaves town. When we walked past an elephant ear stand at the festival I almost started crying. I can’t believe she’s leaving!

In any case, clearly we couldn’t leave without one. So we grabbed an elephant ear and watched the last concert of the night before heading home. (We tried to take the bus but after waiting at the stop for 40 minutes, I pretended we were in NYC and hailed a cab.)

I love living in a city with so much character and a love of the arts so strong that they can put on a folklife festival for several days straight with no admission charge.

Seattle is amazing.
