How to host a doctor themed Birthday party
Sis is pretty much your typical 5 year old girl. She is into dresses, cats, and watching live vaginal birth videos on YouTube. You know, the normal stuff.
What’s that you say? Your 5 year old princess isn’t into all of those things? I am more of a dog person too, so I understand.
Yes, Sis is pretty obsessed with all things medical. When she was 3 her favorite book at preschool was the Children’s Atlas to the Human Body. We bought a home version since she loved it so much and it is still one of her faves. She also used to watch animated videos of “babies in the mommy’s belly” for hours.
About 6 months ago, she started requesting videos of babies coming out of their moms. Live ones. The animated tutorials from Baby Center were no longer cutting it. My recollection of the live births I have attended was that, for an event that results in a child, they are not always the most child friendly of places. They can be downright terrifying. So, what to show her?
You KNOW I started showing her old episodes of “A Baby Story” from TLC. I figure if they are safe for daytime television, they are safe for Sis. I showed her one episode and she was enthralled from the start. It was when I attempted to show her another one that her true medical obsession made itself clear. She stopped me, little hand on mine, and said, “Can you please fast forward through all the talking and just get to the part where the baby is coming out?” No fluff and filler for this one. She just wants the nitty gritty. As soon as that baby was out and wiped off, she was requesting the next episode.
This background explains why Sis’s 5th birthday was a doctor party. It isn’t because Hubs and I are tiger parents, forcing her into a career at the ripe old age of 5. It is because she is a sick and twisted little angel who would have had the party in the maternity ward if they would have agreed to rent us a room and allowed us take tours.
Here are the details!
Her cake was officially the easiest and most reasonably size birthday cake I have ever made. It was peach cake with caramel butter cream frosting. The frosting recipe was from my Trophy Cupcake cookbook. I don’t share those recipes on here because if they took the time to write the book, you can buy it if you want the details. I can assure you it was GOOD. The details were all made with fondant. It was my first time using it (because I am not a fan of the taste) and it was easy. Too easy. Look for more lovely but gross tasting fondant cakes from me in the future! Also, Sis wanted a pig in the cake. I don’t know why. I was just so happy she didn’t want a vaginal birth cake I didn’t think twice about shoving a pig in the pocket.
Chocolate dipped apples that were either plain, sprinkled, or dipped in chopped walnuts. The suckers were from Amazon and I stuck them in a dollar store floral foam ring that was wrapped in red athletic bandage. We also threw some chocolate ambulances around the table.
Marshmallow cotton balls and chocolate dipped pretzel thermometers.
Gummie Life Savers “just in case” in a red container from the dollar store. I cut strips of white contact paper to make the pulse monitor shape on the front. You can also kind of see the white eyeball gumballs in the background. Also see: Happy Birthday Wishes For Brother.
Pirate Booty in plastic gloves made it easy for the kids to run around while holding the snack. Just make sure you get powder free gloves.
We had a few biohazard bags and boxes around to hold food or favors. The favor bags had nose pencil sharpeners, doctor stickers, a doctor kit from the dollar store, a shot pen, a few bandaids, And, as you can see, Bubba left a trail of one bite removed peppers around the community center.
I made a watermelon brain by peeling the green part of the rind away and carving the lines with a paring knife. This was the one project I was sure I would mess up and it was much easier than I expected. Go slowly and it will only take about 20 minutes.
The pinata was filled with random toys and skull and cross bones tattoos.
We played a medical version of pin the tail on the donkey. I took a photo of the top of our Operation game and had it blown up to poster size at the local print shop. I cut out a bunch of red noses from felt. I also cut out the image of the piece that was supposed to go in each hole of the game board. I put sticky tac on the game piece as each kid came up and let them have at it.
We found some medical posters at Archie McPhee’s for $3 each so they were our background decor. Nothing says “5 year old birthday” like some hypertension talk and vertebral diagrams…in Spanish.
