Bad Breath - Causes and Prevention

An unpleasant smell which exhibits in our mouth, usually not taken seriously. But it may lead to problems like gingivitis, periodontitis and more. This is commonly called as "bad breath" which is also known as Halitosis. This is caused by the type of foods we take, by other habits we follow, and also by our unhealthy lifestyle.

What causes bad breath?

1. Basically, the food we eat breaks down in our mouth. If we didn't brush and floss our teeth properly, the bacteria gets formed in our teeth, gums and also in the tongue. This leads to bad breath.

2. Intake of tobacco products and smoking is also a major reason for bad breath. Chain smokers usually have stained teeth and also will be associated with complicated health problems along with the bad breath problem.

3. Poor dental hygiene causes bad breath and other dental complications. Plaque that is formed because of bad oral hygiene will stick to your teeth and tongue causing bad breath problems.

4. Dry mouth is also a reason for bad breath. Saliva helps in cleaning your mouth but in dry mouth condition, your mouth becomes dry as the saliva content is reduced. This also leads to bad breath.

5. If you have any mouth problems like tooth decay, tooth removal, gum disease, these also lead to bad breath.

What does bad breath leads to?

If you have a continuous bad breath problem, then it leads to severe gum problems like periodontitis, gingivitis. Bacteria in the plaque formed on the gums and the teeth will cause bad breath. If it is left untreated gums and bones can be affected much.

As mentioned earlier, dry mouth also causes bad breath. If it is left untreated, then it may lead to the salivary gland problems.

Bad breath leads to many other problems like bronchitis, sinus infections, postnasal drip, diabetes, liver and kidney problems also.

How to prevent bad breath?

Follow the steps below which will help you to fight against the bad breath problems.

1. Brush your teeth twice a day

Brush your teeth thoroughly for 2 to 3 minutes at least twice a day. It removes the plaque present in your teeth and gums which is formed from the food you eat.

2. Floss daily

People miss flossing their teeth. But flossing your teeth daily will keep you away from your doctor and away from many dental problems. Flossing will remove the food particles and the plaque that is formed in between your teeth which cannot be reached by your toothbrush.

3. Use a mouth wash

Rinse your mouth with a good mouthwash regularly after every meal. It gives you a good odour and also washes away the bacteria in your mouth. Studies say that rinsing your mouth with green tea will stop the bacteria formation in your mouth.

4. Regular dental check-ups

It is better to visit your best dentist if you doubt of any kind of dental problem. Through a regular dental visit you can ensure your teeth's condition and also you can maintain your oral health.

5. Avoid tobacco products

Tobacco is one of the major reasons for your dental problems and also other health issues. Once you get to know that you are associated with some kind of dental problem, it is good to avoid the usage of tobacco. If you feel tough, you can gradually decrease it under your dentist's guidance.
