Importance Of Fats In Pet Food

Fats is one of the basic nutrients that are needed to create a balanced diet for pet cats and dogs. Generally, the recommended levels of fat in the diet of healthy dogs is 12-18%, while it’s 15-20% in healthy cats. These amounts should be met to help promote healthy maintenance of pets. The amount of calories provided by fats are more than twice the amount from protein or carbohydrate. This is attributed to the fact that fats are a concentrated energy source. Thus, too much fat without enough physical activity can have negative implications as it can increase the animal’s risk to piling on the pounds and health issues associated with being overweight or obese.

Another important function of fats in pet food is to enhance the taste and smell of the product. The level of fat in pet food can also affect the texture. Fats are also necessary for the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A,D, E, K), promote skin and coat health, and play an important role in the normal function and integrity of body cells, muscles, and nervous tissue.

Do consult with your experienced veterinary clinic Mt. Airy MD regarding your pet’s nutritional needs and how to meet them adequately.
