Project Management Certification - What Is It?

The project management certification is a credential received by individuals known as project management professionals (PMP). It is for individuals that lead and direct project teams. The credential demonstrates to clients, colleagues and employers that the project manager is capable of successfully completing projects due to their extensive skills, experience and knowledge of the subject. These individuals can provide the professionalism needed to achieve successful project results. Currently, nearly 400,000 people around the world hold this certification.

The project management certification takes three to five months to complete. This program is completed online. The first step to becoming certified is to of course register for the certification program, then to study preferably using resources and study guides along with required books. Following this, students must complete and pass the written and multiple choice examination. The exam has 200 multiple choice questions on at least six topics. Individuals are required to score a minimum of 70 percent on the exam in order to be certified. Other steps include completing 35 hours of training related to project management, and documenting three to five years of work experience in this field.

There are several programs online that will help you study to complete your project management certification. Many programs use workbooks, screen capture tutorials, audio programs and lecture videos to deliver lessons. They may also provide podcasts, printable materials and exam simulations, as well as individuals to act as your mentors. These individuals are trained PMPs. Several tips will also help you to successfully complete your training. Among these tips are setting a schedule and sticking to that schedule. Consult study aids and various other resources like videos, audio, and books. This will help you to see things from different angles.

Among the topics that will be discussed in project management certification, project integration management is the first. This deals with all five process groups: initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing. This area will teach individuals to develop project charters and project management plans, direct and manage project execution and control the project work and monitor project work. Other areas of knowledge include project scope management, project time management, project cost management, project quality management, project human resource management, project communications management, project risk management and project procurement management.
