Whether you’re focusing on prevention or defense, learning how to kill fruit flies can be a demanding and bothersome procedure. However, if you take time to educate yourself on these pests and their habits, you will be able to dispatch them much easier and more efficiently.

Prevention and Learning How to Kill Fruit Flies

First and primarily, you need to identify and remove the fruit flies’ food source. These insects love and thrive on sweets, sugar and overripe fruit. So, you will need to locate their food supply and breeding ground so you can remove it. Popular breeding grounds include fruit bowls, unsealed food, and junk. Go through your kitchen and remove all exposed food items, take out the trash, wipe down the counters and do the dishes. This process should be one of the first things you do when determining how to kill fruit flies. In other words, simply setting down some sticky fly traps is not going to cut it. You need to be proactive and sever the problem at its source.

Next, remove all soda and beer cans from your kitchen and make a habit of washing these cans out with water when they’re empty. This will remove the sugary residue left at the bottom of the can, which can be a strong attraction for fruit flies. Also, make it a habit to clean your kitchen regularly and don’t leave your ripened fruit out for too long. Although this may be a hassle at first, if you can get in the habit of washing your dishes and taking out the trash regularly, you can substantially prevent the chances of your kitchen becoming infested with fruit flies. Instead of trying to figure out how to kill fruit flies, you won’t have to be worrying about them at all!

If you notice fruit flies gathering around your refrigerator, you should inspect all your food items for any leaks or spills. Then, use a high-quality kitchen cleaning product to wipe down your fridge and freezer. Also, plan to clean the area around your garbage can and dishwasher frequently to avoid potential fruit fly problems. If flies continue to get in, add a set of well-made window screens to your home and use a fan often in your kitchen to prevent flies from landing on your fruit or counter top. Remember, prevention is the most important aspect of learning how to kill fruit flies.

How to Kill Fruit Flies Quickly and Efficiently

There are several proven methods, tricks and tips on getting rid of fruit flies and chances are, you should have most of the products needed for these procedures right in your kitchen cabinet. First, take a bowl and fill it with vinegar and two or three drops of citrus-scented detergent. The citrus smell will draw the fruit flies in and they will then drown in the bowl. You may have to empty and refill the bowl multiple times until all the flies are gone.

Next, take a bottle of soda and leave it about one-quarter of the way full with the cap on tight. Then, use a small nail or drill bit to create a 1/4-inch hole in the cap. Place the soda bottle where the fruit flies are the thickest and most persistent. If all goes as planned, the flies will enter the hole but will be unable to exit. Alternatively, you could use this same method by taking a few ounces of beer and pouring it into a regular mason jar. Simply wrap the top of the jar with saran wrap and tighten it in place with a rubber band. Poke a couple of small holes into the saran wrap with a small nail and you should be good to go. Replace the beer and soda regularly, if necessary.

Finally, consider using your vacuum to get rid of the fruit flies. However, keep in mind that this will only work if you own a fairly high-quality vacuum with a powerful air filter and suction attachment. To kill the fruit flies, simply detach the suction hose from your vacuum and begin sucking the fruit flies up. To improve the effectiveness of this method, tape a paper towel soaked in vinegar or something sweet to the inside of the hose to attract the flies. To sum it up, simply choose one of the methods above when trying to figure out how to kill fruit flies and remember to keep your kitchen clean or call Pest Control Ballarat trained and certified team to make easy.
