Food Review: Mikey's Original New York Pizza

This was one pizza parlour where the famous line from the Lord of the Rings trilogy would fit right in. Except that you’d have to adapt it to suit the atmosphere. When Sauron created the Ring from the fires of Mordor, his objective was to turn nine Men into his Death Knights. “One Ring to rule them all.” And rule them, Sauron did.

So here, at Mikey’s Original New York Pizza in Bangsar, “One slice to feed them all.” would have been the most appropriate tagline for the restaurant. Each slice that came to our table was enough to be a meal for one person. Anything more and you’d have to have a large group to enjoy the 18″ (inch) pie, a.k.a. the entire pizza and not just per slice.

It was yet another one of those days when you have no idea what to have for lunch. You have your regular hotspots, and then you have the places that you rarely ever visit or have yet to try out because you feel it’s better when you have company. Or just more people to share the fun times with.

So when a family friend decided to join us for lunch on Sunday, she suggested having pizza for lunch, but not just any pizza or the local ones that serve more dough than toppings. She was referring to Mikey’s Original New York Pizza in Bangsar Baru, Kuala Lumpur. Since my husband and I had never been there before, we were up for trying something new. And it was the best decision we have ever made!

The Restaurant

It was a small joint, enough for about six tables to seat at least four people per table, but if you have a large group of friends or family, you can have the tables rearranged to seat everyone. There were a couple more tables on the walkway outside the restaurant, but seeing as the weather was such a scorcher yesterday, we decided to sit inside the restaurant for a change, and some shade.

The Service

Service was prompt and the staff were friendly. Menus were already placed on the table upon seating, and once you make up your mind about what to order, you have to place it at the counter and pay up immediately upon ordering. I supppose that works to prevent people from “accidentally” walking away without paying. If you need to order more food, just go right up to the counter and start again. One might gape and gawp at the prices particularly because each slice is so generous and already cost quite a lot (RM10.88 per slice) and if you ordered the entire 18″ pie, you have to be ready to fork out almost RM90 for the whole thing.

The Atmosphere

The interior of the restaurant was pleasant and a little on the dark side due to their choices of bricks and wood for the walls and floor (respectively), although the weather wasn’t, but at least we were kept well away and out of the sun’s way. Soft music played in the background, enough to keep us entertained but not to the point of getting in the way of our conversations. There weren’t many patrons at the restaurant so the place wasn’t too noisy, thankfully.

The Food

The pizza slices were delectable, tasty, and flavourful morsels. At least it justifies the prices we paid for our slices of pizza and a basket of waffle fries to share. There were a number of different types of toppings for your choice of pizza and each type came with a typical New Yorker name. Each pizza had its own unique toppings and a crust that was thin, cripsy, and golden, and for once, we devoured everything! Normally we don’t when we order pizza from Pizza Hut and Domino’s.

Our table had a slice of Tony Soprano (RM15.88) which came with pepperoni, meatballs, steak, roasted peppers, garlic, and Mozzarella cheese; a slice of Classic New York (RM8.88) which had a thick layer of Mozzarella and Grana Padano cheese, tomato sauce, and olive oil; and a slice of Buffalo Chicken (RM10.88) with a large dollop of blue cheese dressing. The Classic New York was so easy to eat despite the rich cheesy sensation and I usually don’t go for that much cheese because too much of it would give me a migraine!

The Menu

There were other miscellaneous items as well, including pasta, sandwiches, waffle fries and beverages. My husband had his usual Coke Light, me and my Strawberry Iced Tea, and our friend had a 1/2 and 1/2 (something to do with iced teas, I gather…). Hot days called for iced drinks, followed by delicious pizza, and a basket of waffle fries to share. Oh, speaking of which, even the waffle fries had New York names. We had the Staten Island that came with four types of dips: Cool Ranch, Blue Cheese, Spicy Mayo and Heinz Ketchup.

The Verdict

After our satisfying meal, we headed over to a neighbourhood cafe for more conversations and some coffee. It was an enjoyable Sunday, although I wished the weather would lighten up a little and sprinkle some cool and refreshing raindrops on our heads. But that’s wishful thinking. If you haven’t tried Mikey’s, I recommend that you do. It may be down to personal preference but it’s always good to try something new at least once.
