Writing an Essay on Literature? Avoid Making These Common Mistakes

One of the most terrifying ideas to any student is to write an essay. Large portion of students find essay writing really a daunting task, particularly if it is an essay on Literature. For students who have sufficient time to write the essay but don’t know the tricks to create a flawless one, we are mentioning some common mistakes to avoid while writing the essay.

1. Too Loaded with Information

In an essay, we generally try to showcase a topic or an idea. We try our best to gather information on that topic in order to represent it in front of the reader. In our attempt to make the essay informative, we often overburden it with too much information. Putting too much information actually makes the essay sound boring and it offers you enough scope to go off the track. Don’t try to include everything in a single essay. Better if you put only essential ones.

2. Ambiguous structure

Before writing an essay, it is very important to gather and organize your ideas in a meticulous manner. Don’t just let your thoughts roam around and reflect the same in your essay. Arrange your ideas systematically in order to reach to a logical conclusion. This will help you have a smooth transition from one paragraph to the next.

3. Not paying attention to the instructions

If you have been instructed by your college or teacher to write an essay, then chances are high that it will come with a set of instructions to follow. Mostly such instructions consist of topics, word limit, specific points to mention, structure of the content and many other things. Never dare to skip those instructions. Read all of them carefully to understand what they are trying to convey. If you fail to understand the instructions, it is never possible to write an essay on basis of them.

4. Using inappropriate or wrong ‘Point of View’

Not all but a few college essays come paired with a particular Point of View or POV. When there is a specific POV, you have to first understand that and then check the instructions to know what they are expecting from you to write down. You can contact your instructor to have any clarification regarding the instructions or POV.

5. Use of ‘too strong’ or ‘too complicated’ language

While writing an essay on Literature or any other essay, it is best to use a language which is easy to understand. Of course you can decorate your Literature essay with a bunch of mesmerizing quotes and impressive words but don’t make them ‘too strong’ or ‘too complicated’ for readers to digest. Keep them simple and add a few sparkles in between to create an engaging still easy-to-read essay.

6. Failure to maintain the flow

When you are starting a new paragraph, always add one or two lines at the beginning to maintain the flow. This helps in achieving a smooth transition from one paragraph to another. This is why you should first arrange your ideas wisely to maintain the flow of content.

So, these were a few common mistakes that you need to avoid while writing an essay on literature. Keep them in mind and you will be able to make your essay flawless and A grade worthy.
