Copper Sinks: How To Take Care of Them?

Those who have copper sinks know it very well the firsthand beauty of this metal that has been in use for long. But with increasing usage of soft scrubs, bleaches, disinfectants and other harsh chemical solutions, copper sinks are under constant threat. It not always easy to know and understand what is safe and what is not. So how do you make sure that your farmhouse copper sinks are bright and “perfect”?

The copper sinks come in a lot of varieties form the raw copper sinks that are completely unfinished & un-lacquered. Then some sinks are finished with “pre-installed” patina. The cleaning and the care routine for copper sinks depend on the kind of sink that you own and the look that you want from your sink.

When you buy an unfinished copper sink, you buy them with the intention of letting the patina develop naturally. The metal at the start looks bright, reddish, and golden-brown but it slowly darkens. It develops unique pattern over the years and maybe even some green verdigris. If you ever come to know about the “living finish” these are certain kinds of sinks that are being discussed. In these sinks, the patina is usually regular, and it gives the sink a character of its own.

Cleaning The Sinks

If you have a raw copper sink, you can take care of it easily. The object is to let patina develop naturally, so the surface of the sink is left unprotected. It means that you don’t have to apply anything. If you find that the sink is dirty all you need is some dish, soapy water, and a soft cloth. If you try to be more experimental, you may end up harming the patination. Copper is anti-microbial or biostatic, and it is true. Many microorganisms are not able to survive for more than a few hours on the copper surface. But it is true only for the untreated surface. So if you have a raw sink and want to reap all the benefits, it is better not to wax it. Even if you are using the lacquered sinks, you should use the mild dish soap and water for regular cleaning.
