What’s the real cause behind rampant unemployment in India? Is it the COVID-19?
But that just arrived in March.
India has been facing unemployment for years, to some extent the reason behind that at large appears to be reforms & development that is missing but that is just the crux of it.
We are not fighting employment; we are actually fighting unemployability.
There is a stark difference between unemployment and unemployability. But they share a common trait.
Unemployment occurs when there is no job at all.
Unemployability happens where there are jobs but you’re not qualified to fill those positions. Or should I say employers are unable to find that skillset in you?
An unemployed person who has an in-demand skill during the worst economy can manage to find a job and that’s the common trait I would like to bring your attention to.
Certificates and qualifications get you to enter the placement drives but it is the skillset that really gets you the job.
Right now, the Unemployment rate in India is 6.6% where rural contributes to 6.4%
One of the key ways to eradicate unemployment is Skill Development. Eradicating unemployment helps in many ways.
1. It alleviates the overall poverty
2. Crime rates are low
3. Children get access to the education that they deserve
4. An employed civilization helps the economy in several ways
In urban, the problem of unemployability can be mitigated to a great extent, there is an end number of training hubs that specialize in this plus there is awareness about this.
But what about rural?
This is where awareness is missing. These are the dark areas where we need to come together.
People in rural suffers from poverty the worst, they lack the resources to improve their standard of living. Their dependency on improving their standard of living depends upon what tangible resources they can find.
Whether they have a farm or if there is a Construction project taking place where they can seek momentary employment.
But these options are not everlasting. There are some soft skills that if people from rural acquires then there’s no way that they can’t uplift their standard of living.
The problem with skill development in the rural isn’t that people from rural cannot be reformed, it’s unfair to generalize like that.
The solution to what appears to be the problem is the emergence of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship programs that cater to the people from the rural.
There are some soft skills that though may sound negligible but can have a massive impact in terms of skill development for people living in the rural areas whose sole way of earning a livelihood is labor-intensive.
There are some programs that are already active in the rural that inculcates useful skills like English comprehension an important employability skill, computer skills.
It doesn’t end here, even in rural India the spirit for Entrepreneurship is promising.
And there are some businesses that don’t require an enormous amount of investment to establish. An example that goes well with Rural areas can be asset transferring I.e., moving animals from one place to another.
Assistance in khadi, handloom, handcraft business and connecting them with customers from urban.
There are many other developments and advancements that need to be made here, skill development is the answer we are looking for to help India in remarkable ways.
