How to Impress a Geek: 7 Ideas for a Surprise Party

Geeks are hard to amaze. Unless you belong to the same fandom, you might need additional help with deciding on a theme for the party. Luckily, geeks are also easy to please. Once you know their favorite movie or game, it creates a list of endless possibilities for you to make it a party of a lifetime. Here’s a list of themes almost any geek would like, and some decoration tips.

Level 1: Movie Theme

You probably know what they like because geeks adore raving about their beloved fandom. This makes it easier for you as a host to incorporate and tie together every idea. For instance, if they like superhero movies, throw a Marvel or a DC party. If your dear geek loves Avengers, it’s easy to decorate the place with the movie attributes. Start with fun Avengers balloons that will emphasize the epic atmosphere. Yes, Marvel balloons exist, just look here: https://balloons.online/licensed-mylar-and-foil-balloons/the-avengers-balloons/

Aside from decorating the house with inflatables, try to maintain the topic by getting essential artifacts, such as Thor’s hammer or a Sacred Norn Stone of Lethal Will (just google it or ask for these decoration toys at party shops.)

Level 2: Game Night

You know how much geeks love games. Who doesn’t? If you have no idea what game currently excites your geek friend, just go with a safe choice. Mario Bros., Zork, Legends of Zelda, Diablo, Half-Life, Quake – anything that brings nostalgia will do. Aside from picking a game, try and incorporate every detail of lore into everyday life, from costumes to food and miscellaneous. If your geek loves Sims, download Simlish music from the game. Have costumes for everyone attending the party. These can be tacky hats or a full-fledged costume photo session. Find artifacts, cardboard full-length figures for fun, order themed food, and buy beverages.

Level 3: Board Games

If you are a board games fanatic, it would be nice to center a surprise party around a chosen or multiple games. For example, if you like Monopoly, you can bring a custom addition game or create your own spin. Moreover, you may create a Monopoly mascot cake and decorate the house with fake currency, making your guests wear suits and hats. The same works for Mafia, Jenga, and Twister.

Level 4: Retro Party

If you believe you were born in the wrong generation or just adore a specific period, this might be a perfect idea. Decorate your home as a Roaring Twenties venue, a ‘50s cozy home, or ‘60s trippy hippy house. The ’80s would be a great occasion for a disco party, the ‘90s would be great for a grunge concert at home, and Y2K fashion would be a great throwback at Paris Hilton's glamour galore.

Level 5: Comics Night

Many geeks love comic books from fantasy stories to outer space intergalactic plots. Your goal is to find out your geek’s favorite comic book and throw a surprise party based on that information. Start with costume and comic book makeup. Buy rare addition of a comic book if you can. Play out some of the most exciting parts. Finally, you can draw or print a human-height comic book page and cut a hole for a face. This can be a photo zone.

Level 6: Anime Party

Anime and manga scream “geek culture.” If you know their favorite anime, base the whole party around that. Of course, you can throw a costume party with cosplay outfits, watch series together, play visual novels, and order Japanese food. Carton cutouts of their favorite characters or dakimakuras will be the gem of a party. Bring costumes for each guest and let them choose the character for a night. Try Japanese role play where each of you acts as their specific anime hero.
