Nearly 40 years of field research has given me some very practical insight into the answer to that question. While there may be many things that move great followers, there are three that are essential, in my view.

First, leaders that attract great followers are passionate about their goals or objectives. Think about it. Can you recall an occasion when you noticed others rushing to follow a significant number of people rushing to follow anyone who was not passionate about a goal. I can't. In other words, you cannot be vague about where you are going, why you want to go there and how others will benefit if they come along.

Third, great leaders are known for more than just talking. They have a track record of achieving. Most of us want to associate with winners and if you have a record of achieving it becomes much easier to attract quality people to follow you.

Becoming a great leader is then simple, but not easy. Have passion about where you want to go, clearly communicate how to get there and have a reputation of achieving. One cannot stand alone.
