Know the Importance of Marine Lubricants

Proper lubrication is essential for engines and machinery for smoother operations. For marine applications, you will need a specially formulated marine lubricant that can perform in the toughest environments and saltwater conditions. High-quality marine lubricants are designed for a variety of engines, including two-stroke low speed diesel engines that use HFO (heavy fuel oil). They can be used for crankcase lubrication in modern highly rated, low-speed crosshead marine engines, including the ones that require system oil to cool the pistons. The oil is made from a high-quality paraffinic base oil using the latest additive technologies to enable oxidation resistance and thermal stability. The alkalinity is made to be adequate to help neutralise any acids that may go to the crankcase due to fuel sulphur combustion.

A good marine lubricant is available in SAE 30 viscosity grade, with a base number (BN) of five to eight. Its high-quality thermo oxidative stability helps cool pistons, while retarding oil degradation. Enhanced detergency maintains a cleaner crankcase, and trouble-free operation is guaranteed with superior water separation features. Rust inhibitors are added to prevent the bearing surfaces from corroding, and sufficient BN ensures protection from combustion products that may cause corrosion. Heavily loaded bearings should not cause too much wear, as the oil has outstanding load bearing capabilities.

Some marine lubricants have a higher viscosity index, making them multigrade hydraulic fluids. This enables single-grade oil to be used in any marine hydraulic system operating in various climate zones. One of the top features of this lubricant is the use of viscosity index improvers with extensive shear resistance. To reduce the effect of water contamination, the lubricant has superb water separability as determined by the ASTM 1401 test. It also contains an effective corrosion inhibitor, which is proven in the steel in water (IP135B) corrosion test. The oils may be used to lubricate high-speed, high-pressure vane, gear-type, and piston hydraulic pumps.
