Useful Tips For Fitting Stylish French Doors

If you have decided to install stylish French doors in your home, you might be wondering whether there are any tricks to installing them. Before you go placing your order, however, it is important to note that no two homes are ever 100% alike – so sizing can be a problem. If the doors are too small or too large for the space, you’re going to have trouble fixing them. In this article, we have taken a closer look at how to size your space and go about the installation.

Sizes

Both doors and openings (or apertures) come in a range of standard sizes that have become the norm over the years. Of course, if your space doesn’t conform to these standards, you’re going to have some more work on your hands. The sizes that French doors come in are set by the manufacturer, but they are generally between 30 and 72 inches wide per panel. Whatever width you choose, the panels will ultimately be around 82 inches tall.

Sizing

Before you do anything else, take a tape measure and size up your opening to see if it matches any of the sizes listed by your chosen manufacturer. For height, measure from the sill to the underside of the trim. And, for the width, use the shortest measurement from the top, centre and bottom if they vary. Always measure at least twice to ensure that you haven’t made any mistakes. When ordering online, always use the shortest measurement.

Installation

The installation of French doors isn’t as complex or involved as other styles, but it is definitely a task that you’ll want some help for. It is also not a task for DIY newbies – if this is you, it would definitely pay to look for a professional installer or ask the manufacturer whether they can do this for you. Whether you’re performing an interior or exterior installation, you will need a decent set of tools on hand – and don’t forget the safety goggles!

Interior – Begin by removing the old frame using a hammer and pry bar. Be very careful not to damage the trim, as this can be pricey to redo. Make sure the opening is perfectly square using a level – if it’s a little wonky it’s workable, if it’s really out you may want to call in a professional. Next, use the instructions from the kit to install the door in the opening. You will need a helper when placing the panels into the frame.

Exterior – Installation on the outside of the home is a little more complicated. In general, you should be able to get by following the same instructions provided above. However, sealing will be much more important (you will need to use caulk or weather stripping to seal any gaps). If you need to cut an opening, you must contact a professional with experience removing sections of wall from houses.

If all of this seems like a bit much for you to tackle, you always have the option to employ a professional from start to finish. They will handle measuring up the opening and the installation, leaving you with a premium finish that you will be completely satisfied with. If you’re not 100% comfortable with your skills, we definitely don’t recommend this sort of project for you. Although a professional installation will set you back a little more, it is still wholly affordable.
