New Findings: Korean Fashion

As many people have heard, I am taking it upon myself to learn Korean. I could have decided to learn French (and for a while I was), but after designing so many conceptual collections for school, I came to the conclusion that I am just not fit for Paris' fashion industry. I am so drawn to architectural structures and the uniqueness of clothing that I feel like there are only two industries that I could adapt to: Japan or Korea. Being that I used to follow K-Pop news a lot back when I was in my undergrad years and still watch Korean dramas, I learned to pick up a few phrases here and there. My former high school was an international academy pushing the student body population to 85% international students (with 45% of the 85% born in Korea). So I dug a little deeper and tried to make sense of where I belonged in the industry. With research this is what I found:

KYE S/S 2014

SOULPOT STUDIO S/S 2014

MOSCA S/S 2014

RESURRECTION S/S 2014

All those years during my undergrad being confused as to who I should be as a designer, all of last semester when I struggled to find out what it is that I truly wanted to design, all of those feelings kind of disappeared. Where I want to be, who I want to become kind of all made sense after I just dug a little deeper. These collections represented everything I tried to portray in my designs, but could never find the inspiration to do so. They speak to me in ways that other fashion houses could not. Though that is not to say that I do not respect the other fashion houses out there. My love for Yohji Yamamoto, Junya Watanabe, and Rei Kawakubo will always exist in my designer and fan-girl heart, but if I were to become an actual designer I think I fit best in the Korean fashion industry. And although I say this now, who knows where life can take me. For now I will continue studying Korean (it does not hurt to be multilingual) and progress through my studies even further.
