Governors Island

Welcome to Governors Island, earthlings! If you live in New York, you are probably already well versed on this summer paradise (and if not, I really can’t help you at this point). If you’re visiting NY in the summertime: go here. Just do it. Skip all the bullshit (sorry, but not really) trips to see the Statue of Liberty (she’s there, she’ll be there in 100 years from now, and you can see her well enough from other islands, including this one, it’s just not worth it).

This is a mere $2 boat ride away from downtown Manhattan and it’ll take you about 10 minutes to get there from the mainland and once you get there you enter another little world of its own. It’s serene, quaint, quiet, with meadows and tiny hills. The houses are old and grand and the only sad thing about them is that they’re all pretty much abandoned (they would be the ultimate real estate dreams for so many New Yorkers, why are they not for sale? This is something I ask mysel every time I go here).

You can rent a cute bike carriage for two, or just a normal bike too and bike around the island. Or just, like I normally do, go here for the peace and quiet and the Manhattan skyline gawking in the background combined with the idyllic summer setting.
