Insta-lately | what makes a good instagram account

What’s been going on in square format over at @anouskapb.

Instagram is incredibly addictive. It’s usually the first thing I check when I wake up and usually the last thing I look at before going to sleep. And I know I’m not the only one!

What makes it so addictive? Why is it a favourite among hundreds and thousands (and millions!) of people across the globe?

I think it’s because think we all love photographs. We are visual creatures, we love to express ourselves in some way or another and instagram has just made that so much easier for the majority of us.

So what makes a good instagram account?

Well that depends on what kind of feel and look you’re looking for. But the most popular & successful instagram accounts have a running theme. It’s not just about the one photo you put up – it’s about the overall feel of your feed. How the images work together, what is the story you are trying to portray. Again, we are visual creatures and we naturally want continuity.

I like to keep my feed bright, and white.

But that doesn’t mean I don’t use colours. When I do use colours – I am picky. I will try and stick to a particular theme for at least 3-9 photos but I break the rules sometimes with colours that are near it, or compliment whatever colour I’m going with at that time.

I’ve found that since I’ve started being more aware of my “theme” my following has grown and so has my engagement.

At the moment I am embracing greens. For the longest time I really tried to avoid green. It’s not really a colour I love, but I have to take my environment into consideration. I live in Ireland afterall! it’s nothing but green ha ; )

So hopefully that’s a helpful tip to think about when you’re using instagram, check out the profiles you like most and see what they’re doing to be consistent, and you will see there is always a running theme. But make it your own, and eventually you will find your own theme and be able to run with it!
