This is a great project to connect to portrait drawing, pattern design and Surrealist art. Students love the freedom of completing the body to compliment the magazine cutout while the marker-bleeding technique provides a subtle glow to the work. The project is stunning with or without the Zentangle patterns.

Take this project further by making it collaborative. Start by having students select and glue their magazine portrait, then pass or trade with another student who will draw the body continuation. A third student can add the marker bleeding technique and finally, pass or trade another time for a fourth student to fill in with Zentangle patterns.
