Watercolor Cactus

I’m always looking for a new way to introduce students to the “white crayon trick”. This cactus worked really well, and I liked how older students could add shadows if they wanted to.

1. Draw the pot and cactus with a pencil on watercolor paper.
2. Trace all the lines with a black marker.
3. Add lots of prickly white lines with a crayon, using lots of pressure to make sure they would show up.
4. Paint with liquid watercolor paint.
5. To add shadows, paint another layer along the edges and sides.
