Laid Up

I got pretty major knee surgery last week, removing some loose fragments and plugging up a hole with cadaver tissue. It was the result of a decades old sports injury that started to cause problems last winter.

As you can imagine, my whole life's been thrown into upheaval. The first few days afterward were ROUGH — a balancing act between managing my pain and managing my painkillers, which had awful side effects.

My recently retired mother flew out to take care of me, and I could not be more grateful. There's nothing like having your mom around when you're laid up. Despite the circumstances, it's been an amazing bonding experience.

Now that the first week's over, I'm focusing all my efforts on physical therapy. It's shocking how fast the muscles in my right leg have atrophied. And man, using crutches SUCKS.

I have five long weeks ahead of me until I'll be taking real steps again. In the meantime, I need to get used to asking others for help. That's probably gonna be the biggest pain of them all.
