Messy Side Swept Faux-Hawk

This cool style is unlike any we’ve ever done but I totally love it! I did it with her hair totally dry and so the fly-aways and messiness are more prevalent than normal – but that’s what adds to this style. It can be done on shorter hair or long hair which is a plus!

This tutorial isn’t overly complicated, it was just a bit time consuming. I think it took me about 15-17 minutes, so I sped up the video to show you the highlights of the style.

Step 1 – Make a small ponytail off-center near the crown & secure with an elastic

Step 2 – Flip the ponytail, pushing the ponytail up through the bottom

This works great with a Topsy Tail. If you don’t have a Topsy Tail, you can buy one HERE.

Step 3 – Pull on the hair above the elastic to make a messy bubble of hair

This can be done a little or a lot – it just depends on how messy and big you want things.

Step 4 – Cinch ponytail as needed to keep things tight

Step 5 – Part hair from each temple and draw to the back of the head

Step 6 – Join the hair to create another ponytail right below the one from Step 2.

Be sure NOT to include any hair from the first ponytail. All of these sections you divide out need to be on their own, and not joined with the rest.

Step 7 – Flip this second ponytail & gently pull hair out from above the elastic

Step 8 – Cinch ponytail as needed so this bubbled ponytail sits right below the first one

Step 9 – Continue making ponytails and flipping them, and pulling out hair until you reach the nape of the neck

You can make these sections as small or as big as you’d like. I did about 4-5 because I wanted things a bit looser and flowing than the tail of the style.

Step 10 – With remaining hair, divide in half. Draw hair around each side and bring to the front of the ponytail.

Step 11 – Secure with an elastic on top of the rest of the hair & flip the ponytail as previously done

Step 12 – Pull hair out above the elastic as desired & cinch tight

Step 13 – Continue the same process until you run out of hair

Step 14 – With the very tip of the hair, flip up or bobby pin up into the rest of the ponytail to hide

Step 15 – Adjust hair as needed so it looks symmetrical and messy as you’d like & spray with hairspray

FINISHED!
