How To Wear: The Breton Stripe

First introduced in 1858 as uniform for French navy seaman, the Breton stripe shirt was brought into the fashion world through Coco Chanel’s 1917 nautical collection. The striped shirt is an ultimate classic (although doesn’t that stand for anything that Jackie O donned?) Its popularity hasn’t faded today. In fact, it’s been spotted regularly on everyone from Kate Moss to Middleton.

For the most classic Breton stripes, look no further than Saint James. Their Guildo RA ($95) is the perfect striped boat neck and comes in a variety of nautical colors. Wear this as a basic staple, or use it as a base for a more dressed up look like Olivia Palermo. For a slight variation on this classic, try T by Alexander Wang’s Striped Jersey Top ($350).

Breton stripes aren’t limited to a classic daytime getup. For a dressier version of the nautical trend, make a statement in Topshop’s emerald green and white Stripe Satin Dress ($140) or Nasty Gal’s Jumpsuit ($118). Midi skirts are also having a major moment as of late. Pair the Raffia Organza Stripe Skirt ($475) from Tibi with a white crop top or silk racerback cami for preppy with fashionable flair. Tibi also makes this same pattern in a classic day-to-night dress, which is definitely worthy of a place in your closet.
