You are what you read

Each week, I’ll be sharing some of my favorite pieces from the Interwebz. The topics will typically center around health, nutrition and general wellness, but I may throw some random topics in there too (…I have interests outside health and wellness, you know). As a warning, I tend to enjoy long, meaty articles so…

Health Food for Foodies: This is so exciting! People tend to have the mindset that eating healthy means taking away their favorite vices, but it also means adding in so many new foods, flavors and spices. A whole new world opened up to me when I quit gluten and processed foods, I’m so glad I’ve embraced the notion of food as (preventative) medicine.

Study Questions Fat and Heart Disease Link: My dad’s a PhD while I’m just a regular ol’ Jane who happens to be obsessed with nutrition science and we’ve butted heads over this topic more than a few times. I’m really, really hopeful that there will be more studies that further probe the link between “artery clogging” saturated fat and heart disease.

5 shocking reasons why Americans are getting fatter: Many people blame America’s obesity epidemic on simply eating too much and moving too little. While those things are definitely contributors, there may be other factors at play. Perhaps it’s time to stop all the fat-shaming and finger-pointing and consider our environment?

Spot-burning fat: The fitness myth that won’t go away: Given all the fitness experts who have been shouting from the rooftops about how spot-burning fat is impossible, I’m surprised by the number of people pounding out infinity crunches at the gym. Shout-out to the founder of my favorite workout, Brynn Jinnett, who is quoted in this article. She’s brilliant.

The Bugs In Your Stomach Define You As Much–If Not More–Than Your Genes: I’ve been giving probiotics a lot more thought these days. Yet another reason to consider your gut when you’re thinking about your wellness profile. I’m particularly intrigued by this tummy GPS mentioned in the article!
