Some months ago I had to pleasure to interview Mr Davide Taub, Senior Cutter at Gieves & Hawkes, historic bespoke atelier at the no.1 of Savile Row, the iconic street of British tailoring in London. Mr Taub kindly shows me a jacket he is making for himself, with pleats on the upper sleeve. As usual in British tailoring, the jacket is structured, has a good amount of shoulder padding and some rollino in the armhole. Moreover, the shoulder of this jacket is very concave and the breast pocket is boat-shaped. Davide, hailing from Italy, has been doing this job for 15 years and has joined G&H after a period at Maurice Sedwell. At G&H every bespoke garment is in-house produced: ten tailors are employed and nearly 5 suits per week are made in this atelier.
As for the clientele, the average is 40/50 years, but nevertheless they confirm a renewed interest from a younger public. Albeit their bespoke jackets have canvas inside, I notice a small adhesive underneath the horizontal pleat, which is covered by the pocket (see photo below). Finally, to my great surprise, if the customer is big-bellied, they too cut a longer frontal dart, just like in Napoli.

Alcuni mesi ho avuto il piacere di intervistare il signor Davide Taub, Senior Cutter (Capo tagliatore) da Gieves & Hawkes a Londra, storica sartoria al numero 1 di Savile Row, l’iconica strada lodinese del bespoke. Mr Taub mi mostra un capo che sta realizzando per sé con pinces sulla “boccia”, la parte alta della manica. Come da tradizione inglese, la giacca è molto strutturata, presentando un importante strato di spalline e rollino nel giromanica. Inoltre, la spalla è molto insellata e il taschino in petto è a barchetta. Davide, di chiare origini italiane, fa questo lavoro da quindici anni e, dopo un’esperienza presso Maurice Sedwell, ha iniziato a collaborare con G&H. Qui tutto è in-house: dieci è il numero di sarti impiegati, per una produzione di circa cinque abiti a settimana.
Quanto alla clientela, l’età media è 40/50 anni, anche se mi conferma un rinato interesse proveniente da un pubblico più giovane. La giacca è intelata, ma “scorgo” un piccolo adesivo sotto la pince a martello (foto sotto). Interessante scoprire, infine, che se il cliente è panciuto, anche qui fanno la prima ripresa fino al fondo, proprio come a Napoli.
