First Impressions: Entryway Styling

September is in full swing and the cooler temps are starting to settle in. We have been able to sleep with the windows open the last three nights. I love fresh air! With cooler temperatures there comes the need for warmer clothes- jackets, shoes (with socks), even scarves (for some of you in the north this will be very soon). Why not get a head start with organizing your front or back entry with all the necessary goods so when these cooler temps stay for good, you are ready to go?!

I recommend focusing on three main objectives before diving into your entryway design project:

Function: Who uses the space? What is it used for? Is it formal or informal? If you have small children, install hooks at their height so they can hang their own coats and jackets. If you have pets, include some storage for their belongings too! Take a week to observe the space too. Keep a notepad handy so every time you walk in and out the door you can take notes.

Storage (both open and closed)-I recommend open storage like shelving for your shoes and boots. How often do you forget where you took your shoes off? Open storage helps finding them more quickly! For scarves, mittens, and other small items, I recommend closed storage such as baskets or bins. Designate the baskets how you wish- make it your own space!

Aesthetics: The trend today is to organize your ‘stuff’ and let it be visible. Show your coats neatly hung, scarves neatly put in baskets, keys hung, the list goes on. If this is not your style, don’t do it! Make your entryway how you like it. At our old house, we had a small entrance and did not want to clutter it, so we hung the key hook inside the front closet. We did not want any extra stuff hanging around.

And just to get your creative juices flowing, here are a few spaces I am loving!
