creative diaries 24 : athena pelton

Athena Pelton started off as a client. Then I was hers. But somewhere in between then (or almost instantly), we became friends. Athena is a photographer, stylist, and general creative powerhouse (check out her hand lettering!). I couldn’t wait to share more about her in this series and am glad she’s on board! For this creative diary entry, she was to focus on one single work day and answer a few simple questions about the good, the bad, and the inspiring. This is what happened, truthfully.

WHAT IS THE FIRST THING THAT YOU DID THIS MORNING As soon as I woke up I headed to the basement to spend 45 minutes on the treadmill while I watched an episode of Gilmore Girls. Then I headed upstairs and crawled into the bed with the girls for some morning snuggles. We went downstairs together for breakfast – which is my favorite meal of the day right now because I’m doing the Whole 30 and I LOVE breakfast food. Oh, and coffee. Always coffee.

DESCRIBE ONE CHALLENGE THAT YOU FACED I have a full time corporate job during the week, on top of being a freelance creative and business owner, so my husband is a stay-at-home dad. He is currently learning coding and front end web development, (whoop!!) and he uses the computer in my office/studio for his lessons. Today I had a shoot for my new website, &HELEN, and it was quite the learning curve sharing a space with each other, staying focused and on task, and watching over the womb fruits. I’m looking forward to making the switch to full time creative work, and having a spouse that is preparing to work full time from home as well, but today it became obvious that we are going to need another computer, and a bigger office.

DESCRIBE ONE ACCOMPLISHMENT I shot images for a feature that the lovely girls of Drop It Modern are doing on my new brand, &HELEN, and drafted a new blog post. Blogging has sort of become a mundane activity for me, so it feels good to sit down and get some of it done. I also submitted a few weddings to print publications (eeeek!), and managed to teach the youngest womb fruit all the words to “Blank Space.” It’s been a banner day. DESCRIBE ONE THING YOU LEARNED
Cutting cauliflower makes your entire house smell like a fart.

WHAT IS THE LAST THING YOU DID FOR WORK Answered emails. I used to answer emails as soon as they came in, and sometimes, depending on the subject and/or sender, I still do, but most things I leave until the end of the day. Emptying out my inbox gives me a sense of completion, of doneness, and since I work in my home, it’s the perfect way for me to have a definitive end to the work day. Which I think is important. AND JUST FOR FUN, DID YOU EAT ANYTHING TASTY Since I’m doing the Whole 30 (and can’t have donuts – Wah!), I’ve been doing a lot more cooking and meal prepping. For breakfast I had fresh berries with coconut cream and cinnamon and some dried mulberries on top. Seriously so amazing.
