Five Ways to Wear a White Denim Skirt

If you haven’t fully embraced the white jeans trend, because you just can’t wrap your brain around how it would be remotely possible to look good in a pair, I thought I would focus today’s One Item, Five Fashionable Ways on the white denim skirt, the suitable alternative to white jeans. With this type of a skirt, like this one I am featuring from Boden, you get all the benefits of wearing white bottoms (the summer crispness and freshness) without worrying about how your butt and thighs look. Additionally, I don’t know about you, but once it gets sweltering outside I pack all my pants away. On a hot day give me an easy breezy dress or simple skirt and I am happy, hot but happy.

Where to wear a white denim skirt

In general, denim skirts can offer the same versatility that a pair of jeans can offer. They can be worn with just about anything and can be dressed up or down. For errand running or to the casual workplace, a denim skirt, when styled for the proper venue, can get a lot of mileage.

Figure flattering white denim skirts, what to look for

Unlike a swishy, easy skirt, denim skirts are much more structured. They’re not going to move with the body like a fluid skirt will yet, at the same time, the benefit to wearing a denim skirt is they can usually camouflage more figure issues than a skirt without a lot of beefiness or structure can. However, a few points should be considered to get the fit right.

First, length. If a denim skirt is something you plan on wearing while doing a lot of bending or running round, choose a skirt that isn’t too short. There are a lot of micro-minis out there that may have been cute to wear in your younger days but don’t look so good with age. Unless a denim skirt is made of a very lightweight denim the skirt won’t move with you and is typically quite stiff.

Second, fit a denim skirt through the hips. It is always easier to take something in vs. letting something out. If you’ve ever worn a denim skirt that is too tight on the hips you may have noticed it riding up, twisting or that you constantly need to pull it down. If your waist to hip ratio is significant buy a denim skirt to fit your hips and then have it taken in at the waist. Yes, you can take in denim.

Third, if you notice the front pocket bags of your denim skirts showing through, simply take the skirt to the tailor, have the pocket bags removed and the pockets sewn shut.

Outfits using a white denim skirt

Here are five white denim skirt outfits to give you some ideas and inspiration.

Outfit #1- With a chambray shirt

There is a constant debate over wearing denim-on-denim. Personally, I love it IF, and only if, the shades of denim in the top and bottom are different enough. Recently, I wore a light chambray shirt with a pair of jeans and it looked great. Yet, some people disagree with this type of dressing. To each their own, I guess. However, a chambray shirt, like this star dot top from Modcloth, worn with a white denim skirt gives you the denim-on-denim look without looking like Chuck Norris. Bringing in coral as a pop color, I added coral sandals from Anthropologie, a chambray striped handbag with coral details from Aldo and a pair of earrings with a touch of blush coral.

Outfit #2- With a navy blue blazer

You can’t get any more classic than pairing a navy blazer, like this one from Zara, with a white denim skirt. To be less Americana cliché, instead of going for a red, white and blue theme, I decided to add some mint green, but, rest assured, red would be a fine addition, as would any other color as an accent when working with such a neutral base. For the mint green accent, I layered a mint green tank with lace trim from Mango underneath the blazer, added a mint bag from Fossil, and brought all the colors together with this multi-strand necklace from Stella & Dot. Remember, a great way to learn how to combine colors is to look at the colors in your accessories. Lastly, a pair of metallic perforated ballerina flats from Bella Vita finishes the look.

Outfit #3- With metallic

You have probably figured out by now that I am a big fan of metallic accessories, especially in the summer. Being a Capricorn, I love efficiency and metallic shoes and bags definitely fall into the efficiency category because they go with everything while giving some pop to an outfit. Here a pair of Tsubo sandals (one of my new favorite comfort brands) and Zara tote, both in metallic, add some interest to this white denim skirt and printed top that can be great for casual and also great for under a suit for work. To finish the look I added a white Stella & Dot necklace and a red scarf for chilly nights. If you’re digging the denim-on-denim, you could try a denim jacket instead, maybe even one in red. Of course, that navy blazer, shown above, would work, as well.

Outfit #4- With a t-shirt

Let’s face it, when most of us think denim skirt we think of wearing it in the easiest way possible, like with a t-shirt and sandals. This type of look, while easy, in a dress-and-dash manner, doesn’t have to be boring. Here, I took this purple novelty-basic tee (a novelty basic is a piece that has novelty to it but act like a basic in your wardrobe) from Boden and styled it with a pair of purple and orange sandals from TOM’S and added an easy, casual tote from Modcloth. The outfit is finished with a pair of orange floral earrings from Blu Bijoux. Yes, you can run around getting stuff done and look stylish at the same time.

Outfit #5- With a tunic top

One thing I like to do is use the components I style with the featured piece multiple times in one post in addition to repurposing items from previous weeks, it’s just more realistic. Therefore, using the coral sandals from the first look and earrings from the last look, I loved the way they popped with this indigo tile printed tunic from J. Crew. The outfit is finished with a peach tote, a great tonal complement to the coral sandals.
