I happened to catch a documentary on one of my favorite shows ‘A Different World’ a few weeks ago and it got me to thinking about the childhood shows that really shaped who I am. Keep in mind I was born in 1983! I compiled a list of my top ten and I’m curious, do you agree?
A Different World: When I was younger all I wanted to do was go to Hillman College. I was devastated to find out that the actual college wasn’t real! The characters on A Different World were all so relatable — especially Kim because she was one of the only darker skinned females on television every week.
Saved by the Bell: obsessed is not even the word. I had posters, folders, stickers–it was an issue. I wanted to BE Lisa Turtle. I wanted to go to Bayside high and try out for the cheerleading squad.
Amen: Even though I was really small when this was on TV I felt connected to the show because I was raised in the church and knew someone that was just like Thelma, Deacon Frye and the sisters.
Charles in Charge: I absolutely loved this show, I would often wonder what it would be like to have such a cute babysitter and get into all kinds of shenanigans.
90210: I watched this live AND in syndication. (I still watch it). Just thinking about the show brings back memories of how much I HATED Dylan for cheating on Brenda, or terrified I was when Kelly got burned in the fire, or how bad I felt for Andrea when she had that affair. I could go on and on.
227: this show felt like home to me. Although I didn’t live in an apartment building it was the same family feeling on my block of Brooklyn growing up. We all knew each other’s business and there were days we would literally hang out of the window like Miss Pearl.
Different Strokes: this show was eye opening for me as far as race relations were concerned. I was surrounded by black and Latina kids and Mr. Drummond was my representation of a a mixed race family man with an amazing heart and big pockets. plus Arnold’s antics kept me so entertained.
Alf: I used be terrified of this little alien. Then I fell in love with him. I even had a Alf stuffed animal that I slept with every night. He was just so funny!
Small Wonder: I loved this show because I wanted to be a bit of a small wonder myself. Looking back the concept of the show is a bit much, buying a robot daughter? I think that her faces were what had me hooked!
Ghostwriter: Now I don’t know how many of you know about this show. It was on PBS for many 3 years and I’m pretty sure it was a show that was local to NYC because a lot of the scenes were in NYC bodegas. The premise of the show was 5 friends who solves (minor) crimes in NYC. However there was a ghost that would write clues for them. I know, sounds cheesy right? But it was the show to watch on Sunday’s at 6:30pm. Every kid watched and broke down every episode. Every race was represented in the kids and it really was a cult classic. It didn’t last long but it was a spectacular show.
