diy | triangle shelves

shelving is a secret obsession of mine this year.. I'm forever hunting for new ways to display my trinkets and decorate my walls.
after making my rope shelf I'd wanted another project so when I spied these triangle shelves on urban outfitters I thought I'd attempt my own..

I wanted to store plants and books on mine so I chose to make my shelves quite deep but you guys can opt for any dimensions you like. now I'm pretty handy with power tools but I needed some help with the cutting so papa burke was drafted in as trusty assistant. I love having some bonding time with my pop's over woodwork.. such a tomboy!
we cut the joints to fit flush together using a square- dad showed me a handy technique for working out angles but the degree varies each time depending on the length of the wood. my shelves are 20" so our angles were roughly 60 degrees.
after we made these I found an alternative way to make them that you can follow here - I recommend this version as you cut a 30 degree angle each time regardless of what size your shelves are (much easier than the way we made ours- gah!)

remember to measure the planks as you make the cuts so they are even lengths. use wood glue and a few small nails to secure the joints. you can use wood putty to fill gaps/hide any nails and then sand down any rough edges with some sandpaper.
you can stain or wax your wooden shelves but I've left mine bare for now. I might stain some of them a darker walnut shade (I made 4 of these shelves altogether)

I've hung mine off a few screws - I quite like having them turned different ways.

I'm really pleased with how they turned out, I'm already planning some hexagon shelving so I hope I don't run of of walls anytime soon!
