Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009) (English)

The perfect human.

I did not know what awaited me when I sat down to watch 64 episodes of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. I love the first Fullmetal Alchemist series, that series was the reason I was bitten by the anime bug for a period. I have not seen any new anime series for a few years now. I am a little on and off when it comes to TV series, but if I hear that there is planned some new episodes of Hajime no Ippo or Fullmetal Alchemist, then I’m ready to watch some anime, because this is the two best anime series I’ve seen.

After what I understand, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is faithful to the source material (manga). The first series took great liberties and did not follow the manga to the letter. The thirteen first episodes are virtually copies of the first season of the original series from 2004. After the first thirteen episodes, the series takes its own journey with new characters and a much deeper and complex history.

Where the original series took its time and took the viewers on a very emotional journey, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood offers the opposite. Here you will find blood and severed body parts, the tempo is high, the emotional journey is not the main focus of this series.

The characters are not as deep, they get more screen time, but they lack emotion and the depth that the creators created in the first series. The time has moved on since I first watched the original series, but I can sense that the people that made Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, sold much of their soul to reach a wider audience, especially the younger ones. I felt sad for Alphonse Elric in Fullmetal Alchemist, here he is stupid, naive and quite tiring. This is not the Alphonse Elric I remember.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a good series, but it is not as good as the original series from 2004. This was for me to action oriented, I will not forget the most intense and emotional scenes from the original. This is a series that will split the fans into two, both interpretations are solid, but there are two different series that focus on two different areas.

8/10
