The Legend of Korra: Season 1 (2012) (English)

We follow a new Avatar, this time a young girl that’s heading to Republic City where she will be trained to deal with an element she has great problems with, namely air. But something is going on in the city, a man calling himself Amon has grown tired of those who can control elements, they obviously have certain advantages that normal humans do not have. The new Avatar with friends must try stop the evil Amon. But is he really that evil?

Avatar: The Last Airbender is considered to be one of the best animation series ever made. It was a series that just grew and grew on me. Now it has been around 70 years since the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Aang is dead, and we are following a new Avatar who must fight evil forces and find a balance in society.

The Legend of Korra will after I understand get four seasons, but there are not as many episodes in The Legend of Korra as it was in Avatar: The Last Airbender. I noticed quite early in the season that the depth and character building is not anywhere near to what was found in Avatar: The Last Airbender. The characters in The Legend of Korra does not have the depth that the central characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender had. The Legend of Korra is more direct, it throws us right in the new universe and it’s lacking character building.

The Legend of Korra focuses most on tempo, action and excitement. The animation is very good, and the action sequences are superb. The action sequences surpasses what we saw in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The villain and the protagonist is of course the two most interesting characters. Especially the villain is an interesting character, one understands his motive and what he tries to do. It also makes it a bit hard to root on the heroes.

It takes around six episodes before the first season really takes off. Before that the series spends too much time on love, it’s not particularly interesting to watch. But after a little weak introduction, The Legend of Korra wakes up with some good and intense episodes that just means you have to watch the next episode as quickly as possible.

What disappointed me the most was the many voice actors who do not measure up with the good and the really good ones. Many of the voice actors are completely lifeless, they fail to give life to their characters.

The first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender was not the best season in the series. I feel that Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra are two different series that focuses on two different things. Where Avatar: The Last Airbender had much depth and the protagonist learned a lot along the way, you felt that as a viewer, one never get the same feeling with the new Avatar. She is most interested in fighting, she is not that interested to learn like the previous Avatar.

Although I must say that The Legend of Korra seems as if it’s a good and entertaining series, it doesn’t have the qualities and the well-written characters as Avatar: The Last Airbender had. There is too much going on at once, and the last episode in the season is not that good.

8/10
