My Brilliant Life (2014) (English)

We follow a boy and his family. The young boy has a rare disease that makes him age much faster than normal. The family is doing the best they can for their kid, but time runs out.

My Brilliant Life is a touching film that focuses on the young boy and his everyday life. But the film also focuses as much on his parents, they tackle their grief in their own way.

What one would expect of a South Korean drama film about a young boy who dies very young, you get with this film.

What for me ruined the film a bit was the scenes where he is being bullied. Of course there are some stupid and worthless people here on earth, but when a gang of youths are standing around and harasses the boy, it was too much. I do not quite understand why the film absolutely has to have some of these scenes where some stupid people can’t keep their mouths shut and say ugly and derogatory things about a sick boy. No normal people would do this, the point is that the film would like us to feel more sympathy for the young boy when he tries to be a normal boy, but stupid people are all around us, why can’t they just die? But I didn’t like these scenes at all, the boy has it hard enough and I wish that the film could have focused on more positive things.

My Brilliant Life is best for the first hour where it blends joy and warmth. But when the health of the young boy begins to get worse, the film gets to negative in a boring way. And the film is 20 minutes to long. For it gets a little bit tedious towards the end, the film never reaches the finish line with style.
