Tiger Cage (1988) (English)

A police officer films another corrupt police officer when he hangs out with some tough bad guys. This video evidence puts both himself and other unfortunate people around him in danger. He cannot rely on his colleges, there are some rotten apples that have a little too much power, so what should he do with this evidence?

Tiger Cage is directed by the master action choreographer Yuen Woo-ping. I’ve said it before, but I’m not a particular fan of his more modern films. His best films are clearly when he concentrates on martial arts where the story takes place in a time without cars and electricity.

Tiger Cage has plenty of wild and unrealistic action scenes which are only found in films from Hong Kong. But it’s not enough with acceptable action scenes when there’s not one character I found interesting. None of the characters in the Tiger Cage I cared about. When that’s missing, I always feel that I’m watching half of a film.

I’ve become much more critical when I’m watching these kind of films. I’ve seen so many films in my life, and I’ve become bored with films that has uninteresting characters I don’t care about.

The best thing about the film? Donnie Yen of course, but he doesn’t get as much screen time as I could have wanted or that Donnie himself would have wished for. I’m certain that if he could, he would put himself in all the roles. That jokester!

5/10
