Yara Michels

We spent a few minutes every day on ‘living in the now’. Here’s what happened!

Get your happy muscles flexing! For the last ten days, I did a little experiment and tons of you joined in. What it was all about? Committing a few minutes every day to do something that makes you feel happy. From a dance party to getting up earlier to walk to work to spraying your favourite perfume or buying flowers for you and a friend.

Simple as that.

Like I said, this experiment wasn’t about becoming a new you. It’s about acknowledging that life is now, and that you get to make things a little better every morning. Which is why we custom designed a Happy Checklist (free for you to download!), teamed up with Mexx Life is Now perfume that is based on exactly that philosophy – and jumped right in.

A give away of Yara’s favourite things!
So many of you joined and I’d love to see this idea spread out even more! As a way to say ‘thanks’ to those of you participating in the Happy Checklist – what’s to lose, really? – we’re giving away a big packages of Yara’s Favourite Happy Makers. You know, since giving is receiving! It includes cute notebooks, a pineapple USB (obsessed!), a flamingo frame, several bottles of Mexx Life is Now perfume (for you and your besties), a personal card from me and my team, plus everything is wrapped up in my favourite rose gold basket.

After ten days, me and my team sat down and gathered our thoughts on living in the now. Some of the things that stood out to me most were:

1. Happiness is often in the little things. Because one day you’ll look back and realize they were the big things.
Buying a stranger flowers might not seem like a big thing, but in the end it speaks volumes about the bigger picture. Are you going to add some kindness in a hard world? Are you going to leave this world a little better than how you found it?

2. Making someone else happy will make you happy too.
Giving is receiving, people!

3. Working with a list works motivational.
Challenging your mind is a lot easier when you apply structure. So setting one concrete, doable goal every day totally helps. Plus the satisfaction of crossing something off of the list, and finishing a project, is great! That’s why I’d truly recommend actually printing the list out.

4. If you don’t prioritize your happiness, no one else will
There’s no one else who will hit the breaks for you, or prioritize your time and happiness. If you want to understand that life is now, it’s up to you to indulge in little moments of happiness.

5. Adventure won’t find you sitting on the couch.
As with all things worth it, it’s up to you to make things happen. However, the great thing about living in the moment is that it’s already there! Ha.

6. Doing things alone can deepen your sense of happiness.
Like going to a spa by yourself, getting lost at a bookstore or getting off at a different tram stop. Doing something with just you, makes you wonder a bit more.
