Hey Luvs,
Hope you all are doing lovely and feeling great! Today for the Dark-skinned Girls Rock series we're featuring Tara from Makeup By Tara!
Tara Hall Everybody meet Tara! She's 24 years old and from Virginia Beach, VA. She is currently in the United States, Air Force Reserves after serving 4 1/2 years on active duty. She is also a full time Culinary student at the Art Institute of Virginia Beach! I think she may forgot to mention that she's superwoman as well!

Describe yourself in 3 words. Introvert, creative, and funny.

Tell us about your personal style. I'd say that my style is very laid back and I tend to wear a lot of black. I love to rock a great fitting pair of skinny jeans, an off the shoulder shirt and some Chuck Taylors but I can definitely clean up very well when I want to. Most of the time, I express myself through my hair and makeup.
Who are your style icons? I love Solange Knowles' style, I love how relaxed and carefree it looks. I also love the choice of patterns she wears.

Have you ever struggled with self-identity issues because of your complexion? If so what are some things you did to accept yourself for who you are and love yourself? Yes, mainly in middle school and high-school. I grew up in the military, so I always attended predominately Caucasian schools but there were never any issues with my skin complexion . It wasn't until I moved to Stone Mountain, GA when I was going into my first year of middle school which was a predominately black school and I felt very ugly and insecure there. Most of the guys went for the lighter skinned girls, I've even had a guy (whom I was crushing on) tell me that he didn't date dark-skinned girls. Also receiving back handed compliments from lighter skinned girls saying that I was pretty to be dark-skinned, as if I couldn't just be pretty in general. Those things definitely crushed me and made me feel as if there was something wrong with my dark skin. It did take quite some time for me to become comfortable in my own skin but it was through speaking with my mother about the issue and realizing I had a lot of offer as a young woman. I think once I felt beautiful on the inside, the rest just came naturally.

Do you have any advice for other dark-skinned women that are struggling with accepting themselves because of the color of their skin?
I'd say just be comfortable in who you are as a person. Don't let the color of your skin alone define you and don't let strangers back handed compliments get to you. As Eleanor Roosevelt quoted, "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." I definitely keep this in mind all the time because if I feel good about myself, no one can bring me down.
What do you like most about being dark-skinned? I just love how deep and even my complexion is, I wouldn't change it for anything! I mean, my handle isn't "milkchocolatechik" for nothing! Lol

Tara you are gorgeous! Thank you so much for participating in the series and sharing your story with us! I too was made to feel insecure because of the color of my skin by people of my race! The issue of colorism is so big and unfortunate in the African-American the community. I'm tired of us putting each other down because of skin color. No "skin is the right skin"! I too have been told that back-handed comment that "I'm Pretty for a Dark-skinned Girl." Pretty has no race, color, or size...if someone is pretty, thats it's! Their skin color or size does not define their prettiness!! Anywho, lemme stop this mini rant lol.
