I Wish I Was A Little Bit Taller

Fashion can be hard to keep up with sometimes, especially when it comes to footwear. Do I go hidden platform or exposed platform? Or no platform at all with a single sole pump? Should I even wear heels? Aren’t sneakers and Birkenstocks happening right now? WHAT SHOULD I BE WEARING ON MY FEET? Well, let’s just say if you feel like Skee-Lo and you

wish you were a little bit taller (and perhaps even a baller) you’re in luck!

The easy answer is wear whatever the hell you want, although the hidden platforms are done…let’s put those away for good. However, it seems like designers want to make us appear to be model-tall again. After a few years of all sorts of flat shoes being a thing (oxfords, loafers, sneakers, etc.) it’s all about platforms (mostly platform sandals) for spring.

Yet another 70s inspired trend that we just can’t seem to avoid, I have mixed feelings about this one. I used to love wearing heels, and even better with a platform…always easier to walk in. But after realizing how much easier life is in flats, heels are a now a rare occasion for me. I’ve had a few pairs of platform sandals for quite some time and I can’t even remember the last time I wore them (most likely this one time in 2013). After giving a lot of love to my platform brogues this past year, I’m thinking I might give platform sandals a shot again this spring. Who knows?!

Regardless of the style you choose, platforms will always make a statement as they’re really fucking tall. Like people may not recognize you (especially if you’re like me and almost always in flat shoes) because you’re so damn lengthy. But that’s not such a bad thing, is it?

And this platform situation doesn’t look like it’s all that temporary, as we saw them on the spring runways (re: Saint Laurent).

At Pre-Fall (hello Rochas!)

And even regular Fall (a la Donna Karan)

If you’re still deciding whether or not you’re on board with this one, hear me out. Those who are afraid of heights / can barely walk in heels, I can’t recommend these. There’s nothing worse than seeing a girl try to walk in heels who clearly can’t. It actually makes me uncomfortable. Not just because it looks weird but because I don’t want to witness a wipe-out. You’re going to be at least five inches off the ground, and in Chicago it’s still quite icy, so just think about that before you commit. Also know that not all platforms are created equal. They can easily become stripperish — see: these, these and definitely these (I’m sure the Kardashians own all of them, which I’m hoping does not encourage you to purchase). Got it? Good.

Although you can wear platforms with pretty much anything (except something super short, as we’re then back to the stripper conversation) my favorite way is with flares or wide leg pants. Most of the time, these types of pants are too long to wear with flats anyway (unless you get them hemmed) and a dainty sandal or pointed toe pump just doesn’t work…so, platforms to the rescue!

What do you think of the platform comeback? Will you be joining in on this trend? (if so I found some fantastic options to indulge in…if I do say so myself). Have you worn them in the past? Can you actually walk in these shoes? Be honest, now…
